Jack had come to like the quiet weeks between the end of one semester and the start of another; it felt hopeful to him, as if the whole island was holding its breath in anticipation.

Of course, the anticipation would probably lead only to a fresh set of annoyances and tortures. But the quiet was nice anyhow.

He got to work early, appreciating the DJ's ongoing classical music kick, and started going through a stack of invoices. The liquor company seemed to think it should get a full payment for the week without rum; Jack was going to need to make some phone calls to straighten them out.

The bruising had come and gone, but Kaidan was still dealing with some issues of the one-armed kind - he'd be losing the sling in another day or two, thank God, and he could stop abusing his biotics.

If there was anything that earned him the right to a beer, that was it. "Jack, hey," he called. "Tiny, beer?"

Jack watched Tiny get the drink. It was good to have minions. "How's the arm?" he asked, sympathetically.

"Getting better," Kaidan said, taking a seat. "Can't wait to get back out of this."

"I hope they let you out of it soon," Jack nodded. "It doesn't look very comfortable."

"Teaches me to go toe to toe with a krogan," Kaidan said ruefully. He snagged the beer bottle with his biotics. "Anyway, how's business?"

"Quiet so far today," Jack said approvingly. "It won't last, but I'm going to take advantage of the downtime while I can."

More slowly, he added, "You know, you never told me why you went toe to toe with a krogan. Those are the ones who look like tanks, aren't they?"

"Yeah," Kaidan said. "Pretty much. Uh, Blood Pack attack on one of the colonies near the Terminus Systems. I happened to be in the neighborhood while assisting on a shakedown run. It got ugly." He shrugged.

Jack shook his head. "Part of the job, I guess. But it doesn't sound like a fun trip home."

Kaidan took a sip of his beer. "It wasn't supposed to be a fun trip," he pointed out. "The time I spend here is pretty much my downtime."

"Right," Jack said, in a tone that suggested he realized he'd said something dumb. "So the sling is -- the price of a job well done?"

[not_a_whiner]

"Usually it doesn't come to this," Kaidan said easily. "And now-- well, it's not like it's broken. Got knocked around a little, that's all."

"You say that, but I just remember the vorcha and the whiskey," Jack said, a bit darkly. "... anyhow. Do you think you'll be out of the sling by your first class, or won't it matter?"

"I should be fine by then, yeah," Kaidan said easily. "Just adding in an extra layer of medi-gel every day, it'll be good as new in no time."

For some definition of 'no time', anyway.

"Are you prepared for your next class?"

"This place is open during the day?" Dean officially liked this bar. And not just because it lacked zombies.

Jack grinned, because the man was cute and seemed new to the island and it never hurt to smile at cute new people.

"On Mondays it is," he confirmed. "I'm supposed to take care of a few things for the owner I can only do during the day, so I open early. Is there anything I can get for you?"

"A beer would be nice," Dean replied. Because damn right he was cute. And deserved a beer. In the middle of the day.

Well. At least it wasn't hard liquor yet.

"A beer it is," Jack said, and went to pour one. "I assume you've been told you look like the fellow who runs the diner."

"Once or twice." It was a thing these days.

Jack shrugged. "Unless you got into town today, we were going to have to tell you that. There are only so many ways we start conversations around here. If it helps, I like him."

"He's not bad," Dean granted. "Survived that fun dungeon after all."

"The island's little horror sampler platter," Jack said, shaking his head. "Surprised so many people stuck around after that one."

"It was bracing." One way to put it. "If I didn't run off when I found out some weird freakin' version of me went to school here, I don't think that'd drive me away."

Jack tilted his head to one side, thinking. "Besides Priestly?" he checked. "I feel like I saw someone like that, but I think he'd already graduated when I got here. I'm glad I've never had that one thrown at me."

"Yeah, got a built in little brother, and step-family." And was possibly less than pleased by it. Well. Part of it.
