There was a club. And in the club, there was a Jack. He was tending to the club's needs while also trying to finish a term paper on naval leadership in the Canary islands during the Anglo-Spanish wars of the 16th century in time to email it in and, possibly, finally finish his bloody sophomore year of college so he could move on in university and maybe consider getting a law degree before he turned 30.

There was also a Tiny. He could serve drinks, since unlike certain daymen he wasn't also trying to do 87 other things while on the clock at the bar.

They made a good team.

And then there was a picture of a large crowd that contained a really appalling amount of plaid clothing and cowboy hats. And, in the distance, some idiot on a mechanical bull.

So he either knew who to blame, or could ask them for a ride. Or possibly both.

He didn't actually hold life as a hunter against Dean; it just stuck in his memory.

I told him there was nothing to hunt on the island, Kaidan typed quickly. Didn't mention you either. You're good, I think.

Thanks, Jack tapped back, irony-free. I talked around it. No sense working him up.

A pause, then:

Have a good ride!

Derek did not text Jack. Instead he showed up in person.

Really, it might have been better to be via text with how loquacious he was on a good day. "Hey."

"Why am I still in college?" Jack asked, when he glanced away from the laptop screen. He was still a page or two short of the required word count, and it was making him cross abut the entire project "... and hey."

This is why Derek stayed away from laptops. They were evil. "What's your major?"

"European history. I'm good at the facts, it's the interpreting them that takes so long." Jack sighed at his laptop, as if it was at fault. "But once this is in, I'm done for the summer. So."

"Take a break," Derek suggested, reaching over the bar to get himself a glass of water. He was totally allowed, he worked here.

"The 16th century will still be there in half an hour, won't it?" Jack asked, and closed the laptop. The little click the lid made when it came together was very satisfying. "So. Hi again."

"Hey," Derek said again, looking amused. "Suddenly glad I didn't go to college."

"I think I'm trying to prove something," Jack said. "Or I'm stubborn. Or I have a girlfriend who's getting a hundred degrees, and I don't want her to think she's smarter than me."

He flashed a quick grin. "I know, my commitment to knowledge is impressive."
