Devil's Nest, Monday, 6/03

Tiny was still out today. Something about being in mourning -- Jack decided not to press the issue. The DJ, however, was there right on time and enhancing Jack's life with a mix of excruciatingly perky '80's pop.

The worst of it was how it insisted on getting stuck in Jack's head. He hummed to himself about walking on sunshine as he restocked the bar.

It is 80stastic!

The music was the kind of aggressively upbeat, insidious fluff that got stuck in one's head with more ease than should be legal anywhere in the universe. Given that most of Ãponine's repertoire of earworms was on the gloomy side, this was probably a good thing for once.

"No company behind the bar today, monsieur?" she asked as she deposited the mail on the counter and perched on a stool, already tapping her fingers lightly in time with the music.

She seemed in a better, more balanced mood than she'd been in the last time she'd dropped by.

"Tiny is too sad to work," Jack deadpanned, moving over to shuffle through the mail. "I'm thinking about sending flowers."

"If you do I'll be happy to deliver them," Ãponine said in a relatively light tone that suggested she wasn't terribly serious about it. (Though if the offer were true, she would be serious about it, and encroaching on the flower shop's business be damned.) "He hasn't left you with too much to do, has he?"

Jack shook his head. "Quiet week so far. Though watch, now I said that and we'll get half a dozen students tonight. How are your rounds going?"

"Dreadfully boring," Ãponine replied, "though I'm not certain that's a bad thing. I'd rather not clamber up and down all those steps any more than I've absolutely got to."

She bobbed her head to the beat for a bar or two, then burst out laughing.

"Well, now we've both tempted fate! May as well have put up signs advertising for trouble, seeing as we've likely brought it on ourselves."

"Maybe we could go search for trouble together to see if we can head it off," Jack teased. "Though I have a feeling that if you go looking for it, it won't come. It doesn't want you to be prepared."

"Oh, it's easy enough to find if you're enough of a mind to do it, I think," Ãponine said with an oddly sardonic smile. (All right, a different kind of odd than usual.) "Still, today's nice enough and I think I'd rather not go out of my way to ruin it."

Eric was there cursing at his iPhone.

Candy Crush was created by Satan. He'd just decided.

"What did the phone do to you this time?" Jack asked solicitously, the next time he was in Eric's vicinity. (Mainly because he was bored.)

"It's holding me hostage to a fucking stupid game," Eric complained. "I'm going back to Words With Friends."

Jack groaned his sympathy. "I was playing a Play of Crowns game last week," he said. "And as soon as it got interesting, the stupid thing went to a battle that never ends. You wouldn't think they'd be so frustrating, and yet..."

"And yet if have to buy another iPhone this month, Pam will have my ass," Eric replied.

Since it was the third, yes, Eric.

"How many iPhones do you go through for her to even care?"

Jack was curious. Also maybe a bit jealous.

At least he had the grace to look kind of embarrassed about it?

"More than four in a year and she gets annoyed."

"I can't imagine why," Jack said lightly. "I wish I had a Pam. I have to replace my phones all by myself."

He tended to lose them in the woods. Werewolf problems.

"Well, you could ask her, but I'm not responsible for the yelling she'll do," Eric said.

"What if I argue I need it for club business?" Jack wondered.

"I think she'll ask for receipts," Eric said.

This has been in my head for daaaaaaaaaaaaays. SO PERFECT.
