Today was the day that Kenzi had promised Eponine to have duck with all the trimmings. But because her sense of humor was warped, she just had to torment the kitchen staff to go that extra mile:

SPECIALS OF THE DAY
Roast Duck with Baby Potatoes and Baby Carrots in Orange Glaze
Peking Duck with orange slices and onions
Grilled Marinated Goose Breast

The imprecations being muttered at Kenzi were being returned in sadistic Russian Commandant tones.

Dude, that was an extra-long expedition into the freezer. No way was she going to let it go to waste.

The introspective mood that would send her to the beach later on was still in the early stages of brewing when Éponine stopped by the diner.

"Pardieu -- goose as well as duck?"

Please excuse her brain for breaking at the thought of that much poultry.

"I had to do it," Kenzi defended herself. "I saw the ducks. I saw the ones labeled 'goose'. I had to find out what it tastes like."

Pretty good when marinated and grilled, it turned out.

"Which ones do you want?" Here, have an ice-cold Pepsi, Éponine.

"You say that as if you did the work," Éponine scoffed mildly.

"Hey, I walked for miles into that walk-in freezer and froze my toes, my nose, and my... anyway, I retrieved the carcasses of these birds even if I didn't kill 'em myself." She grinned. "And made Cookie and his assistants make all this stuff by singing 'Henry the Eighth' until they surrendered."

"Are they always that difficult to persuade?" asked Éponine, who wasn't sure what some old English king had to do with anything but didn't seem curious enough to ask. "I've never cooked either of those myself, but there was a man who owned a little restaurant near the Champ de Mars, who let me come in from time to time and warm up by the oven, and I watched him dress a duck once. Cooking's hard work, isn't it? I'm glad I don't have to do it, aren't you?"

"Enh, not always. They're fine with any sandwich specials. But I like to kick 'em out of their comfort zones sometimes." Kenzi poured herself a Diet Coke, and put in a straw to blow bubbles with. "I think it's less hard than it was in your day. Priestly, my boss, he loves it. He designs new stuff like Mexican coffee chocolate milkshakes for fun. I like playing with stuff." Just, not, you know, the stuff she was supposed to be playing with, really. "What do you usually have around your place?" She poked at the busboy, who'd been standing there smiling at Éponine. "Dude. Put in that order for the roast duck with trimmings."

Éponine . . . was giving the busboy a dubious look, being unsure why he was smiling at her if he didn't want anything.

"Oh, a little bit of fruit here and there, some bits of bread, but --" She shrugged. "It's much easier for me to go somewhere else to get food."

Partly because she actually didn't know how to cook, and partly because it made her feel extravagant. She still failed at effectively managing her money.

"Some places do take-out, you know. The pizza place and Chinese places do," Kenzi shared, trading missed kicks with the busboy as he went to put in Éponine's order. "Plus, microwave ovens. Sooooo easy to heat up stuff in those."

Kenzi was not someone to 'effectively' manage money. But she was happy to tip off ways to stretch a buck. "That way you don't have to tip or anything."

"Yes, the Chinese place, I like that one," Éponine agreed. "I can eat for days off an order there. D'you know, it's very nice to go into a restaurant and be shown to a table instead of asked to leave? I don't usually like staying, I'd much rather take my food and go, since most places like that are too fancy for a girl like me, but every now and then I stay just because I can."

And she got a bit of a savage kick out of it when the wait staff weren't sure whether she should be there or not.

"I don't worry about that here, though," she added with some satisfaction.

"Well duh," Kenzi said comfortably with a grin, as the busboy came back with Éponine's order of duck with potatoes, carrots, and onions arranged in a pretty circle. "Toby and I went to this fancy-schmancy Italian place for our anniversary last year. And then we left without paying. 'Cause seriously! But I'm not even sure Priestly's making a profit on this place for the guy who owns it."

Éponine made a nonverbal noise of distinct glee and immediately dug into the potatoes, pausing a few bites in to exclaim, "Oh, that's good, they're hot enough to burn my mouth!"

That was a good thing, whether or not it was obvious.

"Isn't he worried about that?" she asked, once she had to take a short break from demolishing the vegetables on her plate. "He seems so nice, I wouldn't have thought that was a concern at all."

There was a logical connection between those two statements. In her head.

To say that her class today had not gone well would be a bit of an understatement. So while it wasn't usually her bag, she was out looking for comfort food.

"Can you believe," she asked, coming in, "that there isn't one proper soda fountain on this whole island?"

"Sadly true," Kenzi commiserated, then looked thoughtful. "Chilly Boulder does good ice cream, though. But I don't think that's a soda fountain.... Do they have a lot of those, where you're from?"

"When," Raven said, grabbing a seat at the counter. "Apparently, the good ones didn't survive the 1950s. Which is too bad, because an egg cream would be swell, right now."

"Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm." Kenzi looked thoughtful. "What goes into one of those besides egg and cream?" She pointed at Raven. "Raven, right? I think I remembered that from the drinking game night, woo."

That would be a "no", then. "There's no egg in it," Raven said. "It's just called that. It's seltzer, milk, and chocolate." She didn't know the proportions, though. "And yes, you're Kenzi? The one who said I was asking to get gremlin bit."

"Heh. Right. Whoops?" Kenzi looked sort of sorry about that. "I'm a little paranoid after two years here, is all... Hang on a sec." She pulled out her phone and looked up 'egg creme', eyebrows going up. "Oh, that's easy. You want chocolate flavor or something else?"

"Chocolate, please," Raven said, sitting up straight at the counter again and folding her hands on it. "And that's alright. It seemed like they were actually out in force after the game, so you weren't totally wrong."

Kenzi's bartending skills could manage soda-jerk requirements just fine. Extra-cold milk, seltzer water, chocolate syrup, carefully stir so as not to mess up the foamy goodness. "See, that's what I mean. I'm pretty sure those little bastards listen in through the air-vents, if nothing else. I'm thinking of getting a cat, teach it to chase them. Here ya go!" Kenzi slid the glass toward Raven with a nice red bendy straw in it. "So how are you liking the 21st Century? Most of the rest of it isn't as weird as this place."

She lied. It was weirder in some places.

"I like the television," Raven said. There were women all over it! Doing things! Sometimes to and with each other!! "But it's not as futuristic as I thought it would be."

"Ah. What were you hoping for most?" Kenzi poured herself another Diet, and called back to the kitchen, "Fries! I'm going on break soon!" Ish. "Where are you from, now that I know where you're from?"
