Devil's Nest, Monday, 6/10

The DJ was out today; in his place, a trio of gremlins were singing Christmas Carols. Jack wasn't entirely certain why they were singing Christmas carols in June -- he hadn't known gremlins could sing to start with -- but he was disinclined to go out of his way to ask them. That way laid biting and a completely miserable day.

He checked to make sure the supplies were in order for that weekend's reunion, half listening to the creatures urging him to have himself a merry little Christmas. At least Tiny seemed to be in the spirit of things -- he was wearing a terrifying holiday sweater vest with nothing underneath.

Well, there went Kaidan's usual greeting.

"...Are those gremlins?"

"Yes, and I'm not going up there to figure out what they did with the DJ," Jack said firmly, then rubbed his eyebrow.

"... oh God, now I need to worry about what they did with the DJ. Hello."

"Chances are the guy is standing on a street corner dressed as a ballerina right now," Kaidan mused, "Tough."

"Better him than us," Jack said, as apparently he'd left his compassion at home for the day. "Did you know those things could sing?"

"No, and I didn't really want to know," Kaidan admitted, sinking down into a seat. "Can we not put a dampener on that, or something?"

Jack thought about it. "I could wrap the speakers in bar towels," he offered. "Or cut the wires, but then I'd just need to get them repaired."

"Towels would be a better idea," Kaidan said, looking back over there. "Of course, I could just peel the gremlins away biotically..."

It was highly possible that Éponine wasn't Tiny's favorite person after her part in breaking up his showtunes-fest on Friday. She didn't come here to socialize with Tiny, though. She came through the door, reaching into her bag for the mail as usual, but paused when she caught sight of the gremlins and shifted her grip on the mailbag in case she needed to fend them off.

"I don't think I dare ask," she said, still wary.

"I know about as much as you do," Jack said, aiming a distinct side-eye up at the DJ booth. "I'm not going to go up and ask and get bitten for my pains."

"No, I don't think it's at all worth knowing if that's the cost," Éponine remarked, easing up just enough to produce the mail and hand it over. "Of course, I'd try to stop you from doing anything too dreadfully embarrassing if I could."

Jack, unable to restrain the urge to jokingly flirt, fluttered his lashes at her. "I always knew you cared for me, Eponine" he said through a laugh. "Thank you."

"Oh, I wouldn't go so far as all that, monsieur," Éponine retorted (albeit through a surprised laugh). "I'd only hope you'd do the same for me."

Joking was easy. Relating to people wasn't.

"Oh, it depends on whether the other way would amuse me more or not," Jack said, before turning more serious. "No, I'd help you. Could I take a photograph first?"

"And do what with it?" asked Éponine, dubious out of the long habit of not trusting anyone. (Never mind that she wouldn't hesitate to do the same to anyone else given the opportunity.) "That might entirely depend on what I thought I was up to."

Derek eyed the DJ booth with grim satisfaction. "Tell me he's somewhere in a dress."

"I was hoping for jumping tree to tree like a monkey," Jack said, with equal satisfaction. "But I'd take a dress. Unless he hired to gremlins to work for him somehow..."

"Probably we would have heard if you could," Jack mused. "But then, it's not the type of thing I've gone looking for."
