Devil's Nest, Monday, 6/17

So that had been a weekend. Jack didn't know quite what to do with it; he'd been content and settled in a way he never predicted for himself. He supposed this was what happened when you stubbornly kept dating the same human long enough.

Triplets, though. If the girls didn't seem like such fantastic forces of nature, he'd be terrified by their mere possibility. As it was, he was planning to sleep as much as he could while he could, since it didn't seem like he'd get any once he was a father of three.

"How many shots do I get?" Derek grumbled, wearing jeans that fit rather than were painted on and a flanel shirt.

Everything was more horrible than usual.

"You can have as many as you want, and I'm sorry they won't do anything," Jack said. He felt a bit guilty his older self had encouraged Stiles and Derek to have a child. "Do you just want the bottle?"

Derek just sighed, frowning at the bottles like it was all their fault that everything was terrible. So, so terrible.

"Water." Best not to waste the alcohol.

Jack retrieved a bottle of water -- the fancy mineral kind, even -- and passed it over. He was pointedly not remarking on what Derek smelled of.

"Was it really that bad?" The weekend as a whole. Not the stuff he smelled.

Derek gave him a look for that. "It's not like it was real."

Because he'd never drive a minivan.

"If it wasn't real, there wouldn't be anything to be upset about," Jack pointed out -- logically, or so he thought. "We were still ourselves."

Logic. Pff. Screw logic, he was an emotionally messed up werewolf!

Derek tapped the side of the bottle idly, giving him an intense look. Or that was his usual blue steel. It could be that. "I was married. To Stiles."

"He's only, what, five years younger?" Jack said. Which seemed like a lot less when your first boyfriend had been older by you than centuries. "And you've been cuddling him at night for months. Stranger things have happened. Anyhow, it's not destiny. Just a possibility."

You and your vampires, Jack.

"That's--" Totally not the same. Derek sighed in an over-dramatic fashion as was his wont. "Good."

"Makes you feel less like everything's already predestined," Jack agreed. "But can I ask -- is the problem more the married part, or the Stiles part?"

Oh sure, ask him to sort out his emotions. Because he really did not have an answer to that one. Sorry about that.

He just frowned, looking away. "What about your future?"

A+ on subtle subject change.

Jack's look said I see what you did there, but I'll let you get away with it. "I liked it," he said. "I don't remember everything, but I had interesting work, a wife I loved, terrible children to spoil. It's more -- happy, than I ever imagined myself."

"Like you are now," Derek added dryly.

Jack looked hurt for a moment. "Should I feel insulted?"

"Cursed," Derek amended. "Happy despite that."

Jack shrugged one shoulder, mollified. "I don't like complaining," he said. "Besides, I always have it in my head how much worse my life could be. So maybe I am happy. Not as settled about it as I as in the future, though."

Derek huffed in acceptance of that. "Triplets. You know we don't actually have litters, right?"

"Of course," though he hadn't in fact been sure until exactly that moment. "I'm blaming Emma's crazy genes. Isn't it the woman's fault?"

"Sure." Let's go with that!

"Great. Make sure you tell Stiles you can't get him pregnant."

Friendly advice! And don't ask why Jack remembered that out of the entire weekend.

"I'll be sure to do that." When they were on speaking terms again without someone having a minor freak out. "If he believes it."

"It'd be a weird thing to lie about," Jack shrugged. "Is he okay?"

"Yes." Better than Derek! But then, that's not difficult. "One of those stupid kids told him it was real."

"... I completely lost track which 'it' you mean, Derek," Jack said, halfway apologizing.

"The... babies. Thing."

Yes.

"Oh." So, the worst 'it.' "Tell him not to believe things random children tell him, either."

"Maybe you'd have better luck than me." Yes, do this for him, Jack. Help him avoid Stiles more.

"You want me to talk to your potential future husband about werewolf sex?"

Which wasn't a no, exactly.

Why did you phrase it that way?!

Derek gave him a mildly horrified look for that. Oh god, why?

"I was just making sure I understood the request!" Jack protested, laughing. So maybe he had phrased it that way a little to watch Derek flail.

"No," Derek finally managed. "Don't talk to him about sex. Or me."

Jack pouted. "So our weekly gossip sessions about your choice of trousers are right out."

He shouldn't enjoy baiting Derek this much.

Because he was evil.

"You don't do that." And oh, did he ever sound uncertain about that.

"Of course not," Jack said. The you idiot was unspoken, because Jack was nicer than the Hales were. "Honestly, I don't even see him that often lately."

Barely nicer!

Derek nodded at that like it was as he expected. Because the idea of werewolf slumber parties was ridiculous. "Try to keep from thinking about my pants too much."

But werewolves looked so cute with painted nails!

"I'll do my best," Jack said dryly.

Or do something else!

For someone who thinks 20 years isn't very long at all.

*I* need a drink now.
