Smug Bay was smug when she opened the diner today -- too smug to take much notice of the guys in the kitchen. See, she'd had a very satisfying call from her father the night before. He wanted her to come home for the second half of the summer to intern in his state senate office. The news she already had a job in a diner had not sat especially well; there'd been a lot of speculation about what kind of people hung out in diners, and how much better working for him would look on her resume. Because of course her future employers would love nepotism and hate actual labor.

No, the job she'd gotten for herself had definitely won out. Bay sat on a stool behind the counter, wrapping silverware and humming to herself. Independence turned out to feel pretty good.
