The Perk, Saturday early afternoon

Batman spent half the night searching the Port of Fandom for any trace of the Joker, even though he didn't really expect to find him. He eventually returned to the Batcave, alerted his allies in Gotham, and slept off the effects of constant knockout gas attacks.

When he woke up this afternoon, he made his way straight to the Perk. He was still shrugging off some of the effects of the gas, so he was going to be downing coffee as if his life depended on it, just to get a little bit of an edge back.

As he sat there with his third cup, he started making notes. First, for a "thank you" to the students who made an attempt to save him. He would have to phrase it very carefully so they didn't think he was actually saying thanks, of course. And then he decided it was nearly time to finish the move to Fandom by showing up at Bruce Wayne. Soon. Very soon.

After training (and showering after training), Jaina popped into the Perk for an iced coffee, stopping at Batman's table after getting her drink. "Sounds like you had an interesting day."

"I've had worse days," Batman said. And then he sipped his coffee.

Jaina nodded, because she knew she'd had worse, so she assumed most people here did. "How're you doing after that?"

"It's another day," Batman said. "At this point I'm waiting for the after-effects of too much knockout gas to wear off. Then I'll be fine."

"That stuff is the worst." Jaina, what kind of life do you live where you can legitimately say that. "You probably could have slept in."

Not that she could picture him sleeping. Maybe it was the costume.

"I did," Batman said. He got a solid six hours. That was more than usual! "Now it's time to get back to business."

Jaina felt like she might regret asking that, but, "Which is?"

"Making plans. Then tonight I have information on an arms deal on the mainland," Batman said. "I'll be interrupting it."

"Oh, so fun stuff," she replied.

Batman gave a small glare. The kind that indicated that he recognized your sarcasm and he was acknowledging that it happened, but he did not appreciate it.

"Something to keep me busy during the break week," Batman said. As if he didn't do this stuff all the time during class sessions, too.

"That makes it sound like a hobby," Jaina said. Which, it totally could be.

"Teaching is the hobby," Batman said. "Once I stop this deal, I can trace it back to its source and work my way up the chain as far as I can before I'm needed for anything back here."

"That's... kind of a good way of looking at it."

Jaina, agreeing with this is not healthier than what you're already doing.

"It's the only way for me to look at it," Batman said. "That's my mission."

"So why'd you come here?" Jaina wondered. "Why not somewhere like New York?"

Batman considered what he wanted to reveal. "I have an associate who spent time here a few years ago. Nightwing," Batman said. "According to him, this is a good place for a working vacation."

"Nightwing," she repeated. "Not sure I knew him."

"He was here when people were turning into gray monsters, apparently," Batman said. "Told me something about beating the Vice Principal in a fight during that ordeal. Actually, he talked about that a lot for a while."

"Ah. I don't think I was around for that," Jaina said. "That would explain it."

"I thought you'd been in Fandom for a while," Batman said, sounding interested.

As if he didn't know her when they were both students.

"I have, but all my time hasn't been consecutive. I'm pretty sure I was dealing with some stuff back home then," she said.

"Ah. How long have you been here then?" Batman asked.

"Six years," she said, thinking about it. Wow. Seriously. "And even when I didn't live here, I was visiting so much I'm not sure people knew I was gone."

"You must be fond of the place to be here that long," Batman mused.

"The place has grown on me," Jaina said carefully. "I like the people, and what the breaks do for me."

"Hopefully the break does the same for me," Batman said before taking another sip of his coffee.
