The fact that there weren't classes this week suited Sparkle just fine. It meant that he wouldn't have to be a little sneak skipping classes in order to stake a claim on the beach, where he was building a little bonfire right there on the sand because ha, like he could afford to rent a grill or something. Not on top of the bunch of burgers and hot dogs and the sneaky fake-ID beer that he'd purchased with his pay for working Saturday and Friday at Dite's, anyhow. Or the shitload of sparklers and glowsticks that he'd picked up from T&C, because no, he wasn't going to be affording real fireworks, either.

He did have a case of Canadian junk food, though. Lewis had been thoughtful enough to ask Sparkle if he should send a care package of some sort, and Sparkle had informed him that he was about to kill someone for a Caramilk bar. Maybe it was because Lewis actually cared, or maybe he just didn't want to see Sparkle get his ass deported for the sake of some chocolate, but he'd sent along more than just Caramilk. There were Coffee Crisps and proper Smarties and potato chips with real flavours, like dill pickle and ketchup. And Coke! Coke made with sugar! If anyone asked nicely and then proved themselves worthy, Sparkle might even be willing to share. Maybe.

And, topping it all off were the little speakers hooked up to the little mp3 player that Sparks had brought along, blaring a mix of Canadian music as loud as they possibly could. Which... wasn't too loud, but if you were to hang around close enough, you'd probably be able to hear. And appreciate that Sparkle was skipping over all of the Bieber. You're welcome.

Even if nobody happened to wander by and decide to stick around, Sparkle was in a pretty fine mood today. It wasn't a concert and fireworks in North York or anything, no. But his low-budget rainy-day Fandom Island Canada Day would do.

Because it is a beach with music and food on it, and mingling is clearly encouraged here.

The burgers and the hot dogs, Sparkle is more or less just giving away. He might be coerced into sharing his beer.

The more Canadian food, you'll have to prove that you're worthy in order to get. This will involve a skill-testing question that Sparkle has formulated specifically for the occasion. It will probably involve asking how you like your Coffee, or which Smarties you're meant to eat last.

To the musical strains of Our Lady Peace, the Barenaked Ladies, and Avril Lavigne.

All Bieber will be skipped, unless you bribe Sparkle. Probably with more beer.

Or glowsticks. Whichever you prefer, unless you happen to get your hands on something better.

Yes, these all probably work better after dark.

Because half the island is populated by Canadians. Not that you have to be Canadian to drop into this post, of course!

Sparkle was so hanging out by the food, here. Partly because somebody had to cook all these damn burgers. If it kept raining on him, the box was going to be too damn soggy to carry back to the dorms without falling apart, and he'd just end up throwing any leftovers to the gulls, anyhow.

There was a beach umbrella set up over his snack food stash, though. That stuff was like gold, here.

Kaidan had honestly just been going for a jog, but, well, food.

Sadly it'd been a couple of decades since Canada Day was last a thing in his time, which meant he missed the significance of the celebration entirely - but again. Food.

He dumped some hamburgers on a plate and dug in, occasionally glancing at some familiar-looking (if really retro) packaging.

Natalie wasn't so much for the mingling, but at least this wasn't the kind of event that she'd actively shun. She could even catch a portal back to Montreal if she got too homesick.

Coming here, she'd added some Canadian candy from her own stash to Sparkle's offerings, but she was keeping the Pepsi with the power-ups for herself. That was what she was nursing while she sat down in the general vicinity of the bonfire.

"Bonne fête du Canada," Sparkle greeted with a wave as Natalie settled in. "I know this isn't a hell of a lot, but, shit, we needed something this year. Beat the Americans to it, you know?"

"See something you like, there, Prof. Alenko?"

Sparkle could be a forgiving kind of guy and overlook that detention from hell on account of it being Canada Day. Just this once. Mostly he was kind of amused at the glances Kaidan kept stealing at his candy stash.

Kaidan swallowed a bite of burger (and realized he had made the horrible faux-pas of crashing a teenager's party. Sigh). "Are those Coffee Crisps?" he asked.

Yeul didn't even know what Canada Day was but she thought that the bonfire was lovely and despite the rain it was a pleasant sort of day to be outside.

So she settled herself down on the sand, not too far from the fire, and people-watched.

Well, it was a teenager's Canada Day thing, and he'd thrown it out on the beach for like anyone to show up, so it wasn't like Sparkle was going to chase him off with a hockey stick or something.

"Yeah, they are," Sparks replied, looking pretty openly amused. "Been a while since you saw any, right? I had to have these things imported."

You know. In a care package. Which was almost the same thing but it sounded far less impressive.

Yeah, but Kaidan was Kaidan, and felt awkward at parties in general - this one was shooting high on the mortification index.

"Haven't had one since I was a kid," he admitted slowly. "Sorry. Thought this was a school thing."

"Heads-up!"

Why yes, there was a box of Smarties flying in a low underhand arc toward Yeul. Sparkle was fond of this one. She didn't have to prove anything.

"Hey, Yeul! Come to celebrate my country's birthday? Or were you just out walking?"

"It's a Canada thing," Sparkle said easily, rooting a chocolate bar out from the case and tossing it in Kaidan's direction. "And I can't eat all these burgers on my own. Believe me, I'll make the attempt, too."

It would end poorly. So, so poorly.

"July first, man. Canada Day. For all my fellows who have hockey stick scars and maple syrup in their veins, it can be a Coffee Crisp free-for-all. I have Smarties and Caramilk and Aero bars in there, too."

It was probably no surprise that she fumbled her catch and then had to pick the box up off the sand, right? She laughed though, so all was good.

"I was walking," she admitted, "but I would be very happy to celebrate your country's birthday!" With candy! She looked at the box of it curiously. "And thank you for the treat."

"It's not gonna be like a huge party," Sparkle shared, "but we have food and music and I brought along some sparklers for after it gets dark, if people stick around that long. You have anything like this where you're from?"

"Haven't really had Canada Day since the home country joined UNAS," Kaidan said. "Huh."

That about encapsulated this. Huh.

"Mind if I grab some?" Uh...

"Oh, that's heartbreaking," Sparkle replied, blinking and kind of nudging the candy stash toward Kaidan. Because... No Canada Day? What the hell was that even? Consolation chocolate. "So, what's a UNAS and why did it eat the best day of the year?"

"New Bodhum has firework displays," she said thoughtfully. "And Academia celebrates it's founding every year. Neither are countries though. We don't really have those."

Yeul tilted her head. "Will you be staying around after dark?"

"And we can leave the unnecessary showing off to them," Natalie replied with some small semblance of a wave of her own. "They can wait a few days."

"Huh... Well, parties are parties, I guess," Sparkle replied, shrugging his shoulders. "I'm planning on being out here until the glowsticks die or the food runs out, whichever comes first, so I'll probably be hanging around pretty late. You gonna stick around?"

"Yeah, they can blow up a small part of their country if they want to," Sparkle laughed. "I mean, I guess I could probably manage if I lit all the sparklers together at once, but that almost takes the fun out of it."

Almost.

"It's good to have some other Canucks around, anyhow. People hanging around who get it."

They could participate in the American celebrations on Thursday, sure. Sparkle probably would, even. But it wasn't for him.

"United North American States," Kaidan said, immediately reaching for a bar of something that looked comfortingly old school chocolate-y. "That's us, the United States, and Mexico."
