Contrary to some peoples' opinion, Jake was actually pretty good at being a member of an organized police force.

It helped that he didn't have a hooker-murdering partner here. And that there wasn't so much a crime rate as the occasional invasion of creepy-ass monster things.

Anyway. Point is, most of Jake's job as sheriff didn't involve criminals so much as it involved making sure the Troopers kept in shape. Which is why he was in his office today, sipping a cup of coffee and watching the squad with a critical eye as they did jumping jacks.

"Hey," Tamsin said. "Are you the sheriff?"

Properly announcing your arrival while you swaggered in was for losers. Stuff she didn't have time for, anyway. So she was standing there, right in the door to Jake's office, her blue leather jacket-clad arms crossed.

That was some swagger. Jake liked the cut of your jib there, Tamsin.

"Yes b'y," he replied. "If this is about the lawn gnomes, you'll need to talk to Ralph over there," he gestured to one of the Troopers.

"Newfie," Tamsin concluded. "Great. I'm the new detective. Pretty sure that one is your job."

Jake's eyes narrowed a bit at the 'Newfie'. "What, finding out who's been leaving shagging gnomes on peoples' lawns uninvited?" he said. "You're the detective. Detect."

Whatever, Jake. "I will get right to that," Tamsin said. "After you show me around. Sir." She could be professional. Mostly.

"Not much to show," Jake admitted, getting up. "My office, reception," he gestured in the general direction of the Trooper manning the phone. "Your pick of desks if you'd like," he said, with a nod towards the bullpen area. The Troopers tended to ignore things like desks and paperwork in favour of congregating at the coffee machine or water cooler. So there were a few to choose from!

"Jail cells," he said, leading her down the corridor. "Maximum occupancy," he tilted his head thoughtfully. "I dunno, a dozen maybe? Typical occupancy, zero."

"You'd think a place like this at least had a steady supply of drunks running around," Tamsin mused, shooting the cells another look. "Or should that be 'laying'?"

"What're you saying there, skipper?" Jake asked with a frown. Yeah, Fandom was shagging weird, but Jake had been here long enough to feel a sense of possessiveness over said weirdness.

"Oh, you know. Tiny island community, nothing else to do," Tamsin said, shrugging. "The architecture's pretty depressing..."

"We get by," Jake answered with a shrug of his own. "There's only two bars here, one of which'll eject you if ye start getting violent. And I don't mean security, I mean the building itself. A little swim in the duck pond seems to sober most up."

She'd seen weirder stuff in her life, but still: this guy pinged human. Humans were annoying when they were trying to prank you. Annoying enough to get thrown out of a bar for.
