Devil's Nest Monday, 9/23

For some reason, the club's phone line was overrun with solicitations today. After politely assuring callers he did not want to donate or hold fundraisers for any charities, sponsor an island Little League team, or participate in a survey about his radio-listening habits, he lost it a bit, just after he explained that no, he did not want another supersized flavoured vodka sampler pack.

He'd probably need to explain the growl to the liquor company sales representative later, but it felt so good that it was worth it. Anyhow, it bought him some peace for now.

The DJ was on a Lady Gaga kick tonight.

Growling seemed like a perfectly acceptable way to deal with solicitation calls, if you asked Éponine. She usually opted for laughing at them, herself, since apparently her laughter tended to unnerve people on the other end of the line. That was useful.

"Good evening, Monsieur Jack," she greeted him as she made her way over to the bar and took a seat, where she proceeded to nod her head vaguely in time with the music.

"Oh, what's this then?" Éponine peered at him curiously. "Have you got strangers calling the wrong place, or asking for unreasonable things? They can be terribly persistent, can't they? For all that it's a useful little contraption it's sometimes more annoying than anything."

"Smart of you; more likely than not half of them aren't on the level anyhow. If my father could --" What a horrifying thought, and one best avoided. Éponine grimaced and started examining her reflection in the bar taps. "We've a few, there, but more people who seem to believe we've only got to think about what they've put in the post -- as if we can remember it especially, out of everything! -- and make it arrive faster. Good lord, how they yell if we tell them no!"

She huffed as if to indicate her opinion on that.

"Well, that's annoying, but not in the same way, is it?"

Éponine waved a hand. "It's ridiculous of them to expect it, so I don't bother myself about them. It isn't much fun to be shouted at, though," she added with a mild grimace. "Have you had to hang up on a lot of people today?"

Éponine burst out laughing at that -- a delighted laugh, so hopefully it wouldn't have the same unsettling effect as the one she tended to use on unwanted callers.

"Good lord, did you really? But that's brilliant, it is, and if he didn't take your meaning after that there's no hope for him."

Sorry, Jack, but she was hardly going to discourage you.

"And did the person on the phone leave you alone after that? I'd hope so,," Éponine remarked, swinging one foot lazily back and forth. One corner of her mouth quirked up in an odd smile. "Wolves can be awfully convincing."

"And have them think you feel any more kindly toward them? Best not risk it," decided Éponine, practically. "Well done, in that case, monsieur the wolf."
