The Perk, Tuesday Evening

As far as Jack could tell, the island was all but empty.

This actually suited him fine. He had the full moon and midterms to get through: it was easier to do those things with a minimum of distractions. He'd spent most of the week so far in his room or at the club. But tonight he wanted a ridiculous coffee drink he didn't trust Tiny to make properly, so he was at the coffee shop with a tall cup of something loaded with whipped cream and hazelnut syrup.

It was pumpkin time of year, Jack. Get yourself together.

Which would be why Derek had been given a pumpkin, uh, creation by the barista who might have winked at him as she did it. "Jack."

"Derek," Jack -- who thought pumpkin coffee was weird -- responded, raising an eyebrow. "How's it going?"

If it helped, Derek was giving the coffee a look too. There was a phone number on the cup.

"We need to talk about Friday."

Shoo, squirrels. Shoo!

"Mmmm," Jack said absently, tilting his head to look at Derek's cup. "Oh, how cute. She drew the zero like a little heart."

Friday was the moon. They would discuss it soon enough.

...rude, Jack. So rude.

"I can pass your number to her if you want," Derek replied dryly. Don't think he wouldn't.

"All I got was proof she thinks Jack has an h at the end," Jack said, turning his cup so Derek could see the squiggle. "She loves me not, I'm afraid. Anyhow, what about Friday?"

"Looks like she thinks your name is Darrell to me." The squiggle was like a Rorschach ink blot.

"It's the lunar eclipse."

Jack looked affronted. "I don't look anything like a Darrell," he said, shooting a glance back to the barista. "And -- is it? Does that mean something in particular?"

Darrell.

"I don't know what it will mean for you, but for me it's the only time I know what being human feels like."

~~Darrell~~ Jack frowned at that, taking a long, thoughtful sip of his coffee to cover his confusion.

"No moon, no powers?" he guessed, once he'd worked it through. "Something like that?"

"Pretty much." A beat. "We can see if it affects you at moonrise. If you don't change..."

They could hide in the living room and watch bad movies on Netflix. With a lot of food. And special brownies to mellow Derek out with.

"I'd get a night off," Jack said, with a genuine spark of interest. "And you'd ... will you even feel like you?"

"In a way."

Jack tried to puzzle that out, shrugged. "I'm interested in seeing it, either way."

Derek smirked, taking a sip of his coffee before regretting it. Ugh, it was just so sweet. "If you want to drink, bring something."

"I think the bar still has pickle vodka."

Jack would not bring pickle vodka.

"Still not drinking that," Derek drawled.

"I don't think anyone will," Jack admitted. "But now I have to figure out what to bring that you would drink."

"I tried drinking the first few eclipses after." After the fire. "Laura got a fake ID to get us some. It's not pleasant to sober up from."

Instant hangover. Eesh.

"But you still want to drink during this one?" Jack checked. "I could skip it, you know. I've seen plenty of drunk people."

"Laura and I had time to figure out better methods." That was totally normal for werewolves. "I'm making brownies."

"I like chocolate."

Jack didn't see the relevance of brownies, but he'd be agreeable.

Derek stared at him for a moment, willing the understanding to hit.

Waaaaaaiting.

He'd be waiting for a long time, then.

Until Jack put down his cup and rubbed his brow. He usually could pass in the 21st century, but certain things eluded him.

"This is one of those cultural things I haven't quite caught up to, isn't it?"

Derek sighed, putting his terrible coffee down so he wouldn't take another sip of it. "Pot brownies. I'm making pot brownies."

There, now he felt like a criminal.

"Oh!" And now Jack was enlightened, even if he felt like an idiot. "I had a roommate in school who was into that. I can think of worse ways to spend an evening."

"They're relaxing and it doesn't go away as fast as the alcohol."

So, say hello to warm, mellow Derek Hale, Jack.

Jack nodded; that matched his experiences. "Are you inviting Jackson and Isaac?"

He had mixed feelings. Entertaining as a stoned Jackson promised to be, he was still a student.

"They're in Italy. And I'm not giving teenagers drugs."

They were for mature, responsible adults. So, maybe Mike could eat the pan of brownies.

"Ah, you're no fun," Jack said -- in a tone that suggested he agreed with Derek's judgement. "Lucky thing the eclipse is this week. It'll make managing everything in Italy that much easier."

"Jackson has gotten better at his control." When not in a fight. He better not get in a fight or so help him...

"I know, but he's still got a temper," Jack said lightly. "Add in the stress of being in a new place and it could have been a very bad week for him."

"He also has a need to impress." He'd picked up on that much at least. "Stiles helped. Apparently his Jackson already has an anchor and it seems to work for this one."
