Sports and Stuff [Tuesday Afternoon, Fast Eddie's]

"Right, so this is a sport that combines big heavy things to throw and beer," Cade said, "so it's my kind of sport. I don't understand why we have to change our shoes, but even if you make the guy cry--" which Cade had, "--you still have to wear these ugly things."

He glared down at his mismatched shoes.

"Find a ball and try to hit all of the sticks at the end with one shot. I'll go get a pitcher."

Cade was the best club organizer ever, right?

Or complain about the shoes and drink beer! It's pretty much the reason you go bowling, right?

Theo didn't mind bowling too much. He, Thom and Kiori had done it a few times back in California. That didn't mean he was some good bowler but it was still fun.

He picked up a ball that was too heavy for him and tossed it down the lane. Three pins fell down.

"Not a bad start," he mumbled to himself.

"At least you hit something, and in your lane," Cade said, nodding. "Both of those are good."

Pause.

"I think. Do you get extra points if you hit something in another lane?"

"Unless the rules of bowling have changed, no," Theo said, snickering. "You might get some impressive glances from other people but your score won't be affected. You'd get a default zero."

"You'd think the degree of difficulty would make it worth more..."

Cade, you don't get to make up a new sport.

"But, what happens if there's someone bowling on that lane and your ball ends up knocking their pins down?"

If Theo had been someone else, that might have almost sounded like an innuendo.

"Then they should buy you a beer as a thank you?" Cade tried.

"C'mon, I bet you can get the ball in your own lane," Theo said, shrugging. "If I can do it, you can do it. Just pick the ball up and throw it straight down the middle."

"Seems kind of boring," Cade said, throwing the ball down the center of the lane...and watching it as it veered off to the right.

"Echuta."

"Nice shot," Theo said, smirking. "You can't hit the pins in this lane, how do you expect to hit the pins in someone else's lane?"

"I figure if I aim for the pins in this lane, I'll hit the ones in a different lane and profit," Cade muttered.

"So, aim for the pins in the other lane and maybe you'll hit the pins in this lane?" Theo suggested.

"I'm afraid I'll aim for the other lane and wing the guy pouring beer," Cade admitted.

"Well..."

Theo paused and couldn't help listening to Dev begging Theo to go with his initial thought of trying to get Cade to pull like a granny. Ange was arguing against it, of course, but Dev won out.

"Maybe you should try a different stance. Take the ball and hold it with both hands."

Cade burst out laughing. "There's no karking way that's how you're supposed to do this."

Of course it did!

"I bet you do better throwing the ball like that then you do any other way," Theo said, shrugging.

"You go first," Cade demanded.

...he could do that. Look, people probably expected to see him bowling like that. They didn't expect Cade to do it so if he could get someone like Cade to look ridiculous, he'd do it.

"Fine," Theo said, picking up the ball and stepping up to the line. He took a breath and then heaved the ball down the lane, granny style. The ball picked up some good speed and actually knocked down seven pins.

"Look at that," he said, impressed with himself.

"Huh," Cade said. "You still look really karking stupid, though."

"Knocked down more pins than you did," Theo said, shrugging. "A win's a win, man."

"Maybe," Cade said, thinking it over. "Hand me the ball," he finally declared. "I'll make this look good."

There was no possible way to make granny bowling look good.

Theo snickered and passed the ball to Cade.

"If anyone can do it, you can." No, no he couldn't. "Good luck!"

Cade stalked down the alley (as much as you can stalk in a pair of bowling shoes without falling on your ass) and paused on the line, then rolled the ball from between his legs (looking as awesome as possible, which...isn't awesome) and watched the results intently.

"I HIT THEM ALL!"

Welcome, Cade, to the granny bowlers.

Theo started clapping because hey, he'd gotten a strike and looked about as ridiculous as you possibly could. Still, it was pretty funny.

"Nice job," he laughed, nodding. "Now you know the best way to bowl. Obviously, I'm a good teacher."

"It's a shame you're so funny looking," Cade said with a little smirk.

"I'm not funny looking," Theo argued, frowning. "Come on now."

Korra, you weren't supposed to bend the ball, especially since it wasn't made of stone.

"Are balls supposed to do that?" Cade asked, tilting his head.

"Do what?" Korra asked, as if the ball hadn't jumped back out of the cutter. "The floor mustn't be level."

Cade blinked. "Uh-huh," he said, taking another drink from his glass of beer.

Get her to bowl too!

Jack had always been disappointed that you weren't allowed to throw the bowling ball at anybody, but she didn't mind the sport. She'd be over in a lane by herself, cursing up a blue streak when her ball curved at the last minute.

I want to go bowling.
