After talking to Rilla on Saturday, Bruce made a point to pull together some charities he thought might interest her. Yes, they were all orphan or soldier based. He was working a hunch.

Once he spent some time going over that, he started looking at possible dates for a local fundraiser. There was a chance that by the time Halloween was over, people would be all partied out for a few weeks, but that would still put him right in line for something Thanksgiving-based. Maybe instead of a gala event, he could go simple and just organize a group to help out at a soup kitchen. After all, not all charity was done in a suit while collecting checks. Or punching dudes. There was a middle ground.

Rilla, in a white dress and her terrible green winter hat, entered the office and looked around. "This looks wonderful," she said.

"It's humble - at least compared to what I'm used to - but it works," Bruce noted. "How are you doing today, Rilla?"

She gave him a tiny smile in reply. "Better today, thank you. Where would you like me to start?"

Bruce grabbed a file off his desk. "I've pulled together a few handwavey charities that I thought you might be interested in. After you've picked out some that catch your eye, long story short, we figure out what can be done to help them out. At a certain point I get lawyers unloved and there are background checks, but you'll be more focused on the paperwork and, if we think a fundraiser would work, planning some kind of event."

"But the first step is reading up on these places," he said, handing the file over.

Rilla began scanning the names of the charities and gave Bruce a slightly tearful smile. "I see what you did here. Thank you."

"You're welcome," Bruce said. "I know how helpful being a little on the nose can be. There's a reason why I out so much effort into children's charities." Because his parents were dead.

Rilla nodded. "Well, I don't want to shift your primary focus," she said softly, "but I'm sure we can find something that overlaps."

"My focus is on making the world a better place for the people in it through whatever means I can," Bruce said. "That's why I hire people who care. They can help me give more attention to something that needs it. I'm excellent at multitasking. So don't worry about my pet projects. They'll be fine."

Rilla hadn't realized just how rich Bruce was.

"All right," she said, chewing on her lower lip. "I'll look through and find some good causes and then coming up with a fundraising event. Maybe an auction?"

To be fair, in 1910s money, his actual net worth would have sounded like made up numbers. Eleventy kajillion or so.

"With the kind of things people here are interested in, I think that could turn out well. I like it," Bruce said. "I should note that you do have your own desk to work at. Feel free to decorate it however you want. It's your space for as long as you're here."

Rilla beamed at him. "Thank you, Bruce. I'll bring in pictures of Walter and the rest of the family next week."
