Freedom Arms, Friday

Now that those vending machines were gone, business had picked back up at Freedom Arms, and in the spirit of capitalism, Alec was rolling with the momentum by advertising a sale.

BUY TWO GUNS, GET THE THIRD FREE


He had, however, thrown out the sandwich board sign that Ron had made him wear. There was a limit to what he would do for this job.

"So," said Anya as she entered the store. "Three guns, that seems inconvenient? I mean where do you keep the third?"

Alec eyed her. "I wasn't making a joke."

He never did, really.

Remembering his manners, or something, he said, "Can I help you find something, or are you just browsing?"

Anya eyed right back. "It now becomes apparent."

Giving the store another look, she placed her hands on her hips. "Do you have something like grappling hooks?"

"I don't think so," Alec said. "We sell weapons, but those are more a kind of sporting equipment. You're talking about the kind for mountain climbing?"

It wasn't all that surprising, but none the less disappointing.

"How about some sturdy ropes and hooks? Yeah, mountain climbing gear would be fine."

"Yeah, no, sorry." Alec shook his head. "There's an actual sporting goods store on Mallard and Sphinx, though. We mostly carry guns and blades here. So if you're looking for anything to cut through the ropes afterward, this would be the place."

"And I'm too young to buy guns, damn. Talk about a bad streak."

She wasn't going to let that ruin her good mood though. "If I get a sword, do you think I could get someone to train me? Don't want to lose a finger trying to look cool."

"Yeah, I would think so," Alec said, feeling as though he was on more solid ground now. "We don't offer trainers here, though we probably should, but if there aren't trainers through the gym in town, I'd think you could put a sign up in the dorms asking for a tutor."

But, bigger question, since this girl had expressed interest in climbing equipment, guns and swords within the span of only a minute and Alec was starting to be a bit concerned now that she admitted that she didn't have any experience: "Do you have some pressing need for these things, or...?"

"It would probably help people decide to buy stuff," Anya said. "Maybe I should look for someone that knows how to use a sword before buying one. Less chance of terrible maiming."

At that, Anya just shrugged. "I'm just looking for something to take my mind off things, plus fencing sounds cool."

"Probably," Alec agreed. Fencing wasn't his specialty, and he didn't know that he had the patience to teach a beginner, but she should probably know what she was doing before she bought something. "Or you could try the practice swords at the salle. It's probably much harder to injure yourself with those."

But not impossible.

Alec had a definite deer-in-the-headlights look about him in response to that question. "Um," he said. "Fencing isn't my specialty, but I guess I could try to teach you. Assuming you mean fencing as combat, and not fencing as a competitive sport."

Anya cocked her head to a side, suddenly a bit confused.

"Does swordplay sound better? Nothing competitive. I don't think that would be useful at all."

And after a moment, because hey why was he looking at her like that.

"Only if you want to."

After a few moments of thinking about it, Anya nodded. "You know the one about chopping people with swords, right? That's the one I'm interested about."

That sounded weird. "Not for chopping people up, of course."

"Well, I do know about that kind." Though Alec personally believed that he'd be a horrible teacher. "I could explain some basics to you, I guess."

"Oh, you don't have to do that," Alec said hastily. He was already more than familiar enough with bad homemade meals and didn't need more of them in his life. Isabelle. "We can just stick to the lessons. I can't guarantee they'll be good enough to be worth any kind of payment, anyway."
