Book Haven, Thursday

There were new students, and teachers, on the island but other than a vague wonder if it would bring in new customers, Rosalind hadn't really paid that much attention to all of them showing up, except to ascertain there was no one she knew who'd arrived.

Rosalind didn't know what she'd do if someone from her world, that she recognized, ever showed up but that was a different matter.

Today, while listening to podcasts of the radio, she worked on unpacking a new shipment of books and setting them out. The shop, possibly out of respect for the new books, was behaving itself today.

The shop was open and there was a sign outside that said:

Now hiring! Apply inside!

While avoiding the blonde in charge of the books.

That's her job.

I really need to suck it up and spend monies to get Rosalind's icons back. Sigh.

Liara had passed by the book shop several times before, but somehow it had not occurred to her that perhaps they were actively in need of employees. Let alone that she was qualified.

She was still not entirely sure of the latter, but recent attempts to acquire food outside of the school had impressed on her the importance of having some kind of income. And so it was with an awkward knock on the shop's door that she entered. "Ah... hello?"

"Coming!" came the call, as Rosalind shelved the last book of her latest pile and hopped off a ladder at the far end of one aisle, tucking her earbuds into a pocket. She made her way to the front of the store, a slim, practical looking blonde in a suit.

"Hello," she said politely. "How can I help you?"

"I... the sign at the front of your shop--"

She was momentarily flustered, unused still to new humans, but she plowed on after a moment. "I was wondering," she said, "If perhaps I could fill in an application for a position at your shop."

Rosalind didn't smile, mostly because Rosalind smiled rarely.

"You can if you want," Rosalind said keeping her voice calm, since she did have a few paper applications under the desk, just in case someone asked about it while Evan was manning the shop. "However, I'm the owner. Rosalind. Since I don't have to pass on your application to anyone, if you had time we could do the interview right now."

Oh Goddess. Liara hadn't entirely come prepared.

"I suppose," she said. "I... do have the time..."

"If you are more comfortable with the form, you may fill one out," Rosalind offered, catching the hesitation. "I do not mind reviewing it later and then letting you know my decision."

It was less efficient but she didn't actually want to scare away a prospective employee.

Liara steeled herself for a moment. "No," she said. "If you prefer to do the interview now, I am currently present and able to answer questions."

Rosalind studied her briefly, then nodded. "As you wish. We'll conduct the interview in the chairs by the window." Which was a small reading area for customers, but no one was using it right then. "Did you want anything to drink? Tea? Coffee?"

"I would like some tea, if it is not too much of an imposition," Liara replied, glancing towards the seats.

"It's not," Rosalind said briskly. "I will be with you presently."

Besides, getting tea for the interview meant she could get herself a coffee.

Liara was rather relieved she had gotten some measure of instruction already. She went towards the indicated area and picked a chair. It seemed similar to the others; it wouldn't offend.

She sat down and waited.

It really wasn't that long, just a couple of minutes, before Rosalind came back with coffee for herself, tea for Liara (which was accompanied by sugar and milk, just in case), and a notepad and pen.

Rosalind didn't really plan on taking many notes for the interview but having it seemed right.

"Thank you for waiting," she said, setting the tea down on the table nearest to the girl. "I'm sorry, I don't believe that I caught your name?"

"My name is Liara T'Soni," Liara supplied automatically, sounding formal. "I am a student at the school."

She reached for the tea, but put little in it.

"Alright," Rosalind said, taking a seat of her own and crossing her legs. She set her notepad on her lap. "Tell me why you're interested in working here."

"I am in need of employment as I have no source of income due to being separated from my home universe," Liara said. "As to why I come seeking it at this shop, I... read. A lot. I believe the pursuit of knowledge is one of the most important parts of life."

To put it mildly.

"It would seem that out of all other venues on the island, this is the one I may be... somewhat qualified for, and may even enjoy."

Rosalind definitely sympathized with being cut-off from home. Her own attempts had turned up nothing, after all.

"I appreciate your honesty," she said, since that was the truth. "Tell me, have you any prior experience in working with books?"

Liara faltered. "No," she said. "I have spent a great deal of time in the library, but I do not believe that qualifies."

"It doesn't, quite," Rosalind agreed, looking slightly amused. "But it is also not a deal-breaker. Your being enthusiastic about books is a far more important detail. Knowledge can be taught, after all."

It was much harder to teach enthusiasm.

"That is what I choose to believe," Liara said. She attempted a small smile to go along with it; it seemed to work on humans, most of the time, at least in the sense that she did not come across as quite so awkward.

Rosalind wrote down a few notes then tucked her pen behind one ear.

"Then we're agreed on that," she said. "I'm willing to hire you. Do you have a preference for what day? Tuesday is taken, but all other days are free."

"I have no particular preference," Liara said, perking up. "I have no classes on Mondays nor Fridays. My weekends are also open."

"How about Fridays?" Rosalind suggested. "You can try that, and if that doesn't work for you, we can discuss it in a few weeks."

Liara blinked, then gave that a nod. That was... quick. "Yes, I believe that would be best," she said. "And-- thank you. I will not let you down."

Hiring on Fandom Island generally was.

"I appreciate that," Rosalind said, smiling slightly. "Welcome aboard. I'll have your contact drawn up so you can review it. Let me know if you have any questions about it."

She sipped her coffee. "Did you want to start tomorrow, or next Friday? It is up to you. I know that tomorrow may be too soon, if you have plans."

Please. Outside of her girlfriend, Liara was practically a recluse.

"No, tomorrow will be fine," she said. "I have not scheduled anything."

"Well, that's fine," Rosalind said. "I'll see you tomorrow then, and I'll walk you through how the store runs and exactly what your job entails."
