Book Haven, Friday

Liara was perhaps a little anxious. She had never held employment before, let alone in a human town, let alone of the kind that involved talking to people as an essential part of the experience. (Her internship didn't count. It had been quiet, unpaid, and involved her getting whisked off an asteroid and thrown through the multiverse.)

She arrived at the shop insanely early. Walked inside, got behind the counter, and... waited. Quietly. Staring straight ahead. After a minute or ten it occurred to her that this was ridiculous, so she turned to a stack of books on the counter and began to organize them. Alphabetically.

Then she found a book on ancient Mesopotamian art and became entirely distracted.

Rosalind had noticed when Liara had shown up early and, after a moment's thought, had decided that, no, that didn't mean she had to go down quite that early to train her.

It was better for all involved anyway that Rosalind had a cup of coffee before coming downstairs.

Precisely at the proper opening time for the shop, Rosalind descended, another coffee (her third of the day) in her hand.

"Good morning," she said.

"Good book?" she asked lightly. "I don't mind you reading on shift as long as the customers are not being ignored."

Rosalind sipped her coffee and wondered if there was something about her employees that made them more apologetic than was really needed.

Maybe the books did it?

"You did nothing wrong," Rosalind said, after a moment. "The store has only just officially opened. Reading before your shift isn't a problem."

"It is," she said mildly. "And to you as well. Have you taken a chance to look at the register?"
