Devil's Nest, Monday, 1/13

Jack didn't know what to make of the fact the club smelled so strongly of roses when he got in today, when there were no flowers anywhere to be found. (And he checked everywhere, down to the waste bins in the restrooms. Twice.) It didn't help that Tiny and the DJ said they had no idea what he meant.

About an hour after he got to work, the scent faded away. Jack devoted himself to sorting through the paperwork and put the mysterious smell out of his mind as some side effect of the coming full moon, his trip to Emma's, or a simple wolfy quirk.

Get a drink!

"Hey, Jack," Kaidan greeted, taking a couple of steps inside. "Beer?"

"We sell those," Jack joked, as he went to get Kaidan a Canadian lager. "Hi there. How's it going?"

"Trying to figure out my teaching plan for the semester," Kaidan said, sinking down into a seat. "It's... complicated."

"You went with the powers idea, didn't you?" Jack checked with raised brows as he slid the beer over. "What's complicating it?"

"Nothing unexpected," Kaidan said, grabbing the beer and taking a sip. "But for a course like this to work, it needs to fit the people, you know?"

"Sure, and not all people are going to feel the same," Jack nodded. "I can imagine there are a lot of different viewpoints."

"Most of 'em have similar problems," Kaidan said. "But some of them don't. I don't know. I don't think I have my program hashed out yet, but... I'm going to have to start somewhere."

"I might just treat it like a conversation," Jack said thoughtfully. "Tell them your story. See what they say about theirs. But I never tried to teach anything like that."

"I have a lot of experience to fall back on," Kaidan said. His expression clouded over somewhat. "But Brain Camp... mostly just taught me how not to do this."

Jack eyed Kaidan thoughtfully. He'd heard a bit about Brain Camp, but long ago that it took him a moment to place the reference.

"Yes, well, maybe do the exact opposite of what they did there and see if that works any better?" Jack suggested -- then added, more softly, "God, maybe some of them have been through the same sort of program."

Now that was not a happy thought.

"I hope not," Kaidan said, a little more quietly. "Programs like that... they take you apart. I don't know if I saw exactly that in those kids, but..."

"Good day, Monsieur Jack," Éponine greeted him as she came in; there was a slight tinge of preoccupation to her demeanor today. "I've something for you -- not the mail, that is, though there's that as well."

"A present?" Jack asked, with a quick grin. "I'm always game for those, Mademoiselle Eponine."

"Yes, but it isn't as much fun if you guess right away and ruin the surprise," she mock-chided him, and laid a small rubber-banded bundle of envelopes down on the bar counter. That done, she reached back into the mailbag and pulled out a book-shaped package awkwardly wrapped in plain brown kraft paper, which she then held out to him. (She'd just decided to avail herself of the packaging supplies at work.)

"Seems it didn't arrive in time for the holidays but that's all right, isn't it?"

"Especially since I don't have anything for you," Jack admitted, unwrapping the present gleefully. "Ha! Oh, this will be perfect for my office when I have one. Thank you, Eponine."

"That's of no concern -- you've been so helpful and kind to me since I came here, I only wanted to do something nice in return." If Éponine was at all disappointed it didn't show -- in truth she was, just a bit, but mostly out of a long habit of never doing things for other people unless it was beneficial to her. This entire gift-buying project had been a concerted effort at doing something unselfish.

So she just laughed with relief. "I thought you might appreciate that sort of thing! I couldn't be sure whether you would use it or not, but I said, well, he'll think it's funny, at least." She gave him a knowing look. "Things aren't always how they appear to be, after all."

Jack felt guilty at his omission, and resolved to drop something nice by the Post Office in the near future.

"Not in the least," he said. "Though I suppose I'll get caught if a colleague wants to look at exactly that volume. I'd have to distract him or her by pouring a drink."

"You could," Éponine said thoughtfully, "have two, this one and a real one, but then the trick would be in not getting the two confused, wouldn't it?"

She flashed a crooked half-smile. "Or hoping he -- or she, that is, I forget sometimes that women can be lawyers now, too -- is likely to appreciate the joke, I s'pose."

"I could put a sticker on one," Jack mused. "And it's funny, isn't it? We had lady attorneys where I was from, but so few I still have to remind myself the women in my classes belong there. Times change, all of that."

"Good lord, don't I know it!" exclaimed Éponine. "It's nice, isn't it, though goodness knows there's room to change more yet."

She paused to chew on her lower lip before adding, in a slightly bitter rush, "It's all well and good for the girls who do get the chance for higher education, anyhow."

Jack eyed her curiously. "Are you thinking of going yourself?"
