Luke's, Wednesday

Kenzi had managed (just barely) to talk Cookie into Lithuanian pretzels, after last week's song-a-thon. So those were on the menu today. Plus, yesterday's expedition into the freezer had brought back the right kinds of chocolate and milk for that dessert that she'd promised 'Ponine. So the Specials board was eclectic today. Well. More so than usual.

SPECIALS
Piršteliai prie alaus
Huevos Rancheros
Philly Cheese Steak
French Chocolate Pots de Creme with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles
French Double Chocolate Mousse Cake

"Oh, good," announced Éponine as she came in and flung herself down gracelessly into a booth as if nothing was bothering her lately, "you've made sure there were things with chocolate after all."

Also hi, Kenzi.

"Well then, let's have at them." Éponine? Not really one to stand on ceremony. "But a sandwich first, I think, as I haven't had time to eat yet -- that cheese steak sounds like a fine idea, yes, indeed. It'd be a shame to waste all that chocolate by getting sick."

"Coffee, I think, and good lord." Éponine shook her head. "We've so many late, stray packages left to sort through, I suspect an entire town's Christmas mail got lost on the way. As for that cat, she's just fine. You know, I went to some pains to make her a nice, comfortable little bed of her own so she'd have a place to sleep now that it's cold. And where do I find her? Napping on top of a pile of books, or in my bed! Anywhere but her own. Stubborn little devil."

She complained, but she complained affectionately.

"We'll see about that," Éponine intoned gravely, but with a brief slight smirk that, if you happened to catch it in that fraction of a second, meant I'll keep an eye out for anything you might like.

"Not Paris in my time, no sir," Éponine snorted, halfway through devouring her sandwich already. "You wouldn't like it very much."

Mind you, she'd be utterly horrified by modern-day Paris, because how could she sneak around all the back streets and hide in secret crevices when so many of those streets had been torn down? THANKS A LOT, BARON HAUSSMANN.

She set the sandwich aside, picked up a spoon, and dug into the dessert, with a muffled exclamation that was indecipherable but clearly pleased.

"If my brother had ever gotten his hands on one of those," she said between spoonfuls, "he'd forever be trying to steal them afterward."

Could she blame him? No.

"He was good at nabbing anything he wanted enough." Éponine's smile was fond, or a half degree off from it; Gavroche was her sibling, but not quite in the same sense as Azelma was. "Damned if every baker in Paris hadn't called him names more than once!"

Éponine nodded. "Yes, me and then Azelma, then Gavroche . . . and the others," she added, almost an afterthought. No, actually an afterthought. "Maman never bothered herself about the boys, though. She turned Gavroche out to look after himself soon's she decided he was old enough. I can't remember what happened to our other brothers."

She paused, licked chocolate off her spoon, and concluded, "It's probably best you didn't have any of your own."

"Only to have a look, if ever." She was a little bit emphatic about that there. "I won't go back for good, not if I can do anything about it."

Éponine tilted her head and looked at Kenzi curiously. "D'you think you were better off staying with them?"

"You sound about as fond of him as I was of my father," Éponine remarked, lips pressed together in a tight expression that wasn't quite a smile. "I stayed with Montparnasse, sometimes. It was better, by a little bit."

Not much, though. Really not much.

Éponine nodded once. "That's him. He wasn't so bad sometimes." Except that was an exaggeration, and she knew it. "It was a convenient enough arrangement."

"No. At least, I don't think so." Éponine poked idly at her dessert, using the spoon to make haphazard patterns of curved lines in it. "Useful as a place like this might've been to Patron-Minette, he or one of the others would undoubtedly've been about before now, if they'd known. He never knew where I was going, either, before I ended up here. Likely as not he just expects the cops to turn my body up somewhere eventually," she added dryly.

If she hadn't made it here, even if she'd survived the barricade it would have happened, probably sooner rather than later.

Éponine laughed raucously, an abrupt swing from morbid to cheerful. "Lord, d'you think I believe it, all of the time? Not one bit, and that suits me just fine."
