Conversational Lithuanian, Tuesday evening

"Good evening. Since there was some interest expressed in food terms," Hannibal nodded at Priestly ~~assuming he's there~~, that will be today's lesson. I should probably warn you," he added wryly, "there's a reason I tend to prefer French food."

He wrote a number of phrases and words* on the board and went over them. "Were there any other words you hoped to learn, or any questions?"

* Go to the Bar and Restaurant sections. Try not to get too distracted by the obviously naked and...interestingly gendered...stick figures.

Got a suggestion for next week's vocabulary or questions about this week's?

Jack raised a hand. "How do you ask if something is made with dairy?" he inquired. "Chefs tend to dump butter in the strangest of places."

"Tai turi pieninę," Hannibal answered. "You can also say, 'Aš košerinio', which is 'I am kosher'."

Jack nodded thoughtfully. "Thank you. With people I don't know I'd rather not go into religion," he explained. "I know it's not usually a problem in this day and age, but -- habits die hard."

"Understandable," Hannibal agreed. "Although I can tell you that at the moment, Lithuania is very fond of Jews and Judaism. But politics and human beings being as they are..." He shrugged. Certainly understandable.

Jack smiled thinly. "Exactly. Politics and human beings are why I've rarely regretted being careful. But it is good to hear I wouldn't be shunned just for saying it, these days."

Jono really wasn't going to begrudge anybody the need to eat. Hell, it was important to learn this aspect of the language, too, so that he wouldn't stare stupidly if anyone (tiny Hannibal) happened to say any of these phrases to him.

He didn't look thrilled today, but at least he looked attentive.

Despite not having half a face, Jono had a very expressive grumpy face.

After the teaching part of class was done, he gave Jono a smile. "Would you like to choose next week's vocabulary? Music, perhaps, or performances?"

It was remarkable just how much 'grump' one person could convey with just one's eyes, wasn't it?

//Making up for the food vocabulary, are you?// He raised an eyebrow at Hannibal, though his tone stayed fairly light. //Really, there's no need. Like I said before, I can't hold eating against people. Next I'll start being angry at the world for breathing, too, and how productive would that be, being jealous of everybody but the dead?//

A pause.

//... Wouldn't mind learning about how to discuss music, though.//

Hannibal shrugged. "Both food and music are things I had planned to discuss in any case; Mr. Priestly's request only moved this to the front. But seeing as this class is less applicable to you, it seems polite to make the next one something that is."

//Oh...//

Well, if that was the case, who was Jonothon to say no?

//I... I appreciate that, thank you. And I apologize if my attitude was at all distracting through class.//

What with all of that sitting in perfect silence and paying attention to the lecture that he'd been doing.

"Words for drinks are always a good idea," Atticus said. "Also? Swear words."

Hannibal eyed him. "Drinks, and cursing," he noted. "Shall I include words on seeking medical help and speaking with the police as well?"

They tended to go well with bar fights.

Priestly super hadn't expected an immediate entire class devoted to food words. He definitely appreciated it, though. This? This made sense to him.

Who knew, maybe once his confidence was up, he wouldn't panic and decide he couldn't learn anything new.

To be fair, it didn't take much to get Hannibal to talk about food.

After class, he handed Priestly (and anyone else who asked) several sheets of food words.

"This was a bit beyond the scope of one class, but I thought you might be interested."

"Aw, cool," Priestly said with a smile. "Thanks, man."

Today we have:

Chestnut soup
Homemade French bread
Seared foie gras with sautéed apples
Mulled white wine

He is really glad to have his sense of smell back.
