Furnado Animal Shelter, Wednesday
A well-dressed woman strode into the store early in the morning with nothing in her hands and apparently nothing to say. She simply bypassed the front desk, stood off to the side, and waited.
Shortly behind her, three burly men entered, carrying a hundred-gallon aquarium that was full up with water and just a few tiny, tiny goldfish. They hauled it onto an unoccupied countertop with great effort.
April eyed the woman. "You know there was an easier way to do that, right?"
The woman slapped a few bills down on the counter and left in a hurry.
April shrugged and handed the money over to the workers. It was a dick move to have even given it to her in the first place.

Talk to April
Re: Talk to April
"Hey there," she said, raising her eyebrows in greeting. "You got anything kind of scary, maybe half-tame, but not so bad it's going to wreck my apartment? I need a new pet."
Re: Talk to April
"Got some bigger dogs in the back," she said. "Some of them had behavioral issues in the past. That a problem?"

Re: Talk to April
In the meantime, they had arrived at the larger, scarier dog section. April waved a hand, letting Jack take her pick, but she did note, "Biters are over here. If you're really not scared, these guys would be your better bet, since we can only keep 'em for so long and no one's really lining up for them."
Re: Talk to April
"Huh. What do you know about that one (http://www.petfinder.com/petdetail/28091275/)?"
Re: Talk to April
It was truly sad.
Anyway, April liked Jack's taste, and her mouth quirked into a small smile as she crouched down to consult a clipboard over the dog's cage. "That's Natasha. You could change her name if you wanted to, obviously. Causasian sheepdog. She's about two or three, somewhere around eighty pounds. She's housebroken but not completely trained, and she'll give you some trouble, but nothing life-threatening. Probably."
That 'probably' was just April's way of being nice!
Re: Talk to April
She knelt by Natasha's cage, offering the dog her fingers. "Hey, girl. Hi, Natasha," she cooed. The dog warily stretched toward her hand, but didn't come too close.
Re: Talk to April
She eyed Natasha and Jack for a minute, then reached over for a brown paper bag full of dog treats off to the side. "Want to try giving her one of these?" she offered.
Re: Talk to April
She reached for a treat, offered it to Natasha slowly. The dog inched closer -- it looked as though she wanted the treat, but didn't quite trust Jack to give it to her yet. Finally she moved just enough to grab it from between Jack's fingers before taking it back to a safe corner.
"Someone has not been nice to that dog."
Re: Talk to April
She looked at Jack instead of Natasha. "She wouldn't be the only dog back here who's been abused. At least she weighs almost what she should for her breed and age, so it might not have been as bad as it could have been, but you're probably looking at some aggression and fear-biting before you can get her to trust you. And she still might not."
Re: Talk to April
She glanced back at April. There were other dogs, but Natasha kind of had her heart already. "So, how do adoptions here work?"
Re: Talk to April
"It's pretty easy, actually," April said, heading back to the counter for the key to Natasha's cage and some paperwork. "You fill out a form really quick, you can pick out any of the extra stuff like dog food and leashes and stuff if you want any of that, but otherwise you're good to go. I have some pamphlets and stuff for you, too."
