Portalocity Office | Thursday

It was business as usual over at Sam's office, except that the espresso machine was emitting a low clickety-clack sound that only stopped whenever Sam got up to try to fix the problem.

"I know you're doing this on purpose," she told the machine severely after the fourth or fifth time she examined it and found absolutely nothing wrong. "And that's your prerogative, but you ought to know, I've got a whole box of tools just over there."

Threatening a coffee machine. This was a new low for Systems Alliance Comm Specialist Traynor.

"The coffee machine giving you trouble?" Éponine asked from the doorway, looking faintly amused; she'd glanced through the window just in time to catch the tail end of one of those examinations.

"It's just being awfully loud," Sam complained. She wasn't quite pouting, but it was close. "There's nothing stuck in it so far as I can tell, so there's just no reason."

She was frustrated. Could you tell?

Sam sighed. "How's your day going?"

Éponine moved in from the doorway and looked at the espresso machine, addressing it in a loud voice. "Listen here, there's no reason for you to be acting like a spoiled child, seeing as you aren't one. Don't you know people have things to do?"

She broke off there and smiled sheepishly. "I don't know that it will do any good," she told Sam. "It wouldn't elsewhere, goodness knows, but why not try?"

"I'm having a perfectly uninteresting day, really," she went on, jumping from one topic to another with her usual abruptness. "That's why I had to stop and see what you were doing."

Sam smiled at Éponine's lecture to the coffee machine: it would certainly convince her, if she was a sentient coffee machine.

"Well, I'm sorry to disappoint," she replied teasingly. "I'm not much more interesting myself. But I dare say it might be better here than out on your route; I just realized the other day, while I've been racing to work and back to avoid the cold, you haven't got any escape from it during your workday, have you?"

"Good lord! I don't mind," Éponine protested, laughing a little bit. "So long's I keep moving it's warm enough, climbing up and down all those steps with a heavy bag, and it isn't so bad when you've got shoes and a nice coat, 'specially during the daytime. I used to --"

She broke off and shook her head. "Still, it's nice to rest for a minute or two here and there, and even better when I don't have to talk to myself for company, so there, you see? I'm not disappointed at all."
