Fast Eddie's, Thursday Night

Fast Eddie's seemed quiet tonight so far. About the only sign of student activity Alana spotted when she walked in were some
crepe paper and balloons from a long-ago birthday party, but those faded away before she could look back.

She ignored the pool tables but eyed the assorted beeping and booping games in the arcade, decided which of them she wanted to play, then made a beeline to the money-changing machine. She had no problem paying her own way on date-type things when she planned to kick the guy's ass -- which, in this case, she did.

(Sorry, Raleigh.)

"Want to pick what we do first?"

"You like shooting games?" Because they could get killed in five minutes flat. Fun times, right?

"Love 'em," Alana said, flashing a grin. "Especially if you get to blow the heads off something really gnarly."

And then get killed in five minutes flat, yes.

"Zombies it is," Raleigh replied with a solemn look. Because this was an important thing to do.

"Naturally," Alana agreed, equally solemn. "We stand between the undead horde and the safety of the planet."

She collected the quarters from the change machine and pocketed them.

"Pretty sure that would actually be something that happens here," Raleigh replied dryly, trailing after her like an eager little puppy.

"Which makes it extra important that we practice fighting them, right?" Alana asked rhetorically.

She picked up the gun attached to Zombie Attack! and examined it as though it might in fact be a key part of island defense.

"It'll be on us to save the day," Raleigh replied, grabbing his own gun to get ready to kill a large number of zombies.

And not scream when they popped out of nowhere on the dark screen.

The game started -- some opening animation about the CDC announcing an epidemic, and it being your job as a loyal CDC agent to clear out a suburb and get any humans left to safety.

Alana feigned a delicate yawn at the story that turned into a yelp when a zombie did, in fact, pop out of nowhere.

Which got Raleigh to laugh as he pulled the trigger, only stopping to 'reload' once the screen loudly prompted him to. "You think the CDC actually has guns?"

"The game says they do," Alana said, distracted as she scanned for more zombies. She got off a clean headshot on the next one she noticed, but she doubted that would be enough for long. "But I don't even know what they really are in the" -- bang, bang -- "real world."

"They study sick... things." Yeah. You explain it all, Raleigh.

"Like doctors?"

Alana considered this as she barely held off another zOmbie.

"There could be doctors with guns."

Raleigh squinted at the screen, firing a few times at the zombie to no avail. "There could be."

Of course he picked the gun that didn't work right.

"Maybe if zombies happened more often, we'd know more."

Alana managed to dispatch Raleigh's zombie at the last possible second, but hadn't noticed the one who came up behind her avatar.

"Maybe," she said. "Maybe that's our problem. Not enough real zombie attacks."

Behind you!" Since he couldn't manage to shoot it himself. "How else will we be prepared?"

"Power of -- shit."

That was supposed to be 'power of imagination,' but Alana was busy trying not to die, and having little success at it. "Help me!"

"I'm trying!" His gun was just terrible. Even after smacked it with the flat of his hand. "Did we start on impossible mode?"

Alana shrugged. "I didn't see a difficulty selector thingie."

Annnnnd then she was dead, and that had been considerably less than five minutes.

Woe.

And yet Raleigh's completely unarmed avatar was still alive. SOMEHOW.

He fired a few more times and hit absolutely nothing. "Now I remember why my brother stopped taking me to these kinds of places."

"Because the games cheat?" Alana guessed.

"Because the games cheat," Raleigh confirmed as his poor, poor CDC worker was torn apart by zombies. "But the company makes up for it."

"Flirt," Alana accused, but she was grinning. "Want to try this again, or go play some pool?"

She was going to try to steal a kiss while he thought about his answer.

Which got a surprised, but pleased look out of Raleigh before he kissed back. "I don't know how to play pool, so you might have to show me."

"I can try," Alana offered. "As long as you don't need theperson teaching you to be all that good."

"Well, we'll have to come back more to practice."

SNEAKY, RALEIGH.

Alana nodded. "Definitely. That way we can both get really good."

SHE COULD BE SUBTLE TOO.

THEY WERE THE MOST SUBTLE PEOPLE AROUND.

"And then beat other people," he suggested. "We could earn money for a dinner that isn't from Mooby's."

"Let's not get crazy with that," Alana said. "A restaurant with cloth napkins ... I dunno. Might be a little too fancy for me."

"No paper crowns..."

It was madness, wasn't it?

Alana pouted. "But you look so cute in a paper crown!"

"I make sacrifices," Raleigh replied sadly. "For a fancy meal."

"It's noble," Alana said compassionately.

A moment later, she added, "So have you ever been in any of the not-Mooby's places on the island? Pizza doesn't count."

"Nah, I need a job to pay for that. Think they're hiring here?"

"Maybe?" Alana guessed. "You should go ask. This would be a fun job."

"Or flip burgers at Mooby's," he added. "If you like a man in uniform..."

Alana snorted. "Sorry, uniforms are hot. Smelling like animal fat is not. Maybe the pizza place?"

Smelling like melty cheese was much better!

"I'd probably get free pizza out of it," Raleigh said thoughtfully. "And I could find out why they always deliver more than ordered."
