Trooper Station | Friday

Stiles had waited until his second shift at the station to start digging through old cases. He was very proud of himself for his restraint. And the island's cases had the weird benefit of occasionally offering up live sound bytes of the case in question! Awesome and slightly scary. If he hadn't known other people were also hearing weird crap he would have chalked it up to the nemeton.

He was there and his desk was covered in paper. Don't worry, it was organized to him.

Derek had been distracted by someone reading a story about a lost cow. In the trooper station.

Yeah.

"Did someone dump files for you to organize?" Derek did not respect your method, Stiles. Sorry not sorry.

"No, I dragged these out myself." He was nosy, deal with it.

Derek rolled his eyes and dropped a bag of burgers on the desk. "For a reason?"

"I like reading police reports. It's fun," Stiles said, opening up the bag. "You brought me food."

He didn't know why he was surprised, but he was.

"I was hungry and in the area." Yes. Clearly. "Aren't those a lot of gnome thefts?"

"The more recent ones are," he said. "But the older ones have some cool stuff. Not as interesting as Beacon Hills, but I'll make do with what I have."

"Sound fun."

And now he was grabbing food for himself. Ah, greasy burgers. He wasn't banned from those yet.

Give it time, Derek. Give it time.

"Have a seat, make yourself at home," Stiles said, clearing off some paperwork and shoving some of it on the floor. Still organized!

Noooooooo!

"Professional," he drawled, taking one of the seats.

"You should see my dad's office," Stiles said. "I learned from the best."

"It explains the mess you leave in the living room," Derek replied, unwrapping his food. And not mentioning how that mess also migrated to Derek's bedroom before things.

"You're lucky I haven't started my own murder board in Fandom," Stiles said, grabbing a burger for himself. "That's a real mess. An organized one."

"God, what are you, four?"

That was Tamsin's way of saying 'hello'. She hadn't actually bothered to say it to the kid before, mostly because she didn't care. But-- slow day.

"Yes, I'm four," Stiles said, looking up from his reading. "I can see why they hired you, with those reasoning skills."

"No, eleven," Tamsin said, tilting her head mock-thoughtfully. "Even better."

"Creative," Stiles said flatly. "Something you want? Coffee?"

"Actually, I'd like to know what you're digging into," Tamsin said casually. Well, as casually as you could with an expression that looked like she spent most of her days repeating the word 'murder' over and over in her head. "School project?"

"Just reading," he said. "I like this sort of stuff."

"What, grisly murders and stalking lawn gnomes?"

This kid needed a better hobby.

"Mostly the grisly murders part," he said. "Though there seems to be a lack of that here compared to my hometown."

"Are you from one of those places that keep having 'mysterious murders' popping up all The Y Documents-style?" Tamsin asked, crossing her arms.

Usually, Fae killings. But it was funny watching humans scramble.

"Pretty much," he said. "But the town's literally a beacon for the supernatural so that's to be expected. Though we get regular murderers too on occasion."

Congratulations, Stiles, you'd just become... slightly less boring!

"Really?" Tamsin asked. "What, like the usual pop-culture horror show kind or the more esoteric brand of supernatural?"
