There was a puppy in the shelter that had decided that enough was enough in regards to the cold outside, and was refusing to take a walk. April could sympathize. Even as a Midwesterner, she was sick and tired of this bull-crap weather.

That was why she had a plan. The plan involved a sign that she put in the window.

HEY! TEACHERS!
TAKE ME ON YOUR SPRING BREAK TRIP, GET A FREE PUPPY.

All shelter puppies were free, but April didn't have to tell them that.

Jack had needed more pet food for Natasha -- the dog went through it at a rate even a biotic couldn't believe, good lord. The sign prompted her to linger at the counter for a moment.

"Too bad you already sold me a dog, or you might have a taker," she said.

"I could make it free dog food instead," April suggested. Her eyes were huge: she looked vaguely desperate.

Jack drummed her nails against the counter. "Free dog food and you line up my petsitter for during the trip?" she suggested.

The haggling was for kicks. April was a cool chick, and picking her own roomie ensured Jack wouldn't get stuck sleeping near someone she hated. She didn't see any reason not to take her along.

April tapped her chin like she was considering it, even though she was certain she was willing to do it. "Sure," she said. "The hotel won't take her?"

"Hadn't asked," Jack admitted. "But that's a better idea. If they let me, you walk her first thing in the mornings and we call it even?"

"That works." Personally, April thought walking a massive dog like Jack's was probably going to be pretty fun. "Cool if I bring my dog too? He's a pit. Adorable as hell."

"Sure, why not?" Jack asked. "Natasha seems pretty good with other dogs. Not so good with people, but we're working on it."

"Yeah, I meant to ask how she's doing," April said. "Cliff might get her running around. He's pretty good at that."

She hauled a large bag of dog food up from under the counter. "Is this the kind you like?"

"That's what I've been buying," Jack nodded. "And she's doing great, thanks. Even tolerated my kid this weekend, so I didn't have to make him sleep in the park."

Joking. Really. Though if it had come down to a choice between Val and Natasha, she wasn't sure which way she would have gone.

"Yeah, banishing your kid to the park because he made your dog antsy would have looked weird to the neighbors," April said solemnly. "And the squirrels would've probably inducted him into their cult."

Which could be a pro or a con, really.

"Who was your kid with? I had one with Sarah."

"And it's bad form to send back your kid chanting to the squirrel god," Jack deadpanned in agreement. "Val's dad was Cade. Who already sort of makes me regret the 'no touching the young meat' rule, so the kid thing didn't help."

Stay classy, Jack.

"Yeah, he's pretty hot for a high school kid," April admitted. And, smirkily, "Must suck being a teacher and over 21."

"Screw you," Jack said, in a friendly way. "25 isn't that old."

"That's what Sarah said once," April drawled, not at all honestly, "and then I saw her walking with a cane the other day."

Nope.

Jack looked vastly unimpressed. "Uh-huh. And then she what, patted you on the head and gave you a piece of peppermint?"

"And then she called me 'sonny,'" April agreed, concluding, "Her eyes aren't what they used to be."

Jack rolled her eyes. "Keep talking, Ludgate. I don't have to let you come with me to Bali, y'know."

But she would anyhow.

"No, man, you need me there," April drawled. "To provide a youthful influence. Keep you away from the shuffleboard. You know."

"So that makes my job what?" Jack asked. "Buying you ice cream, keeping the scuzzy older boys from knocking you up behind the pool house?"

"Little older than that," April suggested. "More like laughing at me if a bouncer takes away my fake."

Little did April know that that wouldn't be a problem in Bali.
