Conversational Lithuanian, Tuesday evening

"Good evening, everybody." Hanna smiled at them, and seeing much of the same confusion that seemed to be her lot this week, introduced herself. "I'm Doctor Hanna Lecter. Apparently this island has decided to play tricks. However, let me assure you that this is still Conversational Lithuanian, and there is still food." She waved at it, smiling a little.

"I thought in honor of the trip to Bali, we'd cover a bit of travel dialogue this week. So, the vocabulary for today:"

Talk about vacations you just took...ones you wish you could take...

Right, so Sheba now had a whole new perspective on the reactions she'd gotten over the last few weeks.

It was kind of eerie, wasn't it? She tried not to let it show too much on her face, though. There was only so much 'oh my god you're a woman' a person could take, and she didn't want to add to Hanna reaching her limit.

Today's offerings:

Buta no Kakuni (pork belly)
Agebitashi (fried vegetables)
Tuna tartare with yuzu gelee (Raw tuna, avocado, and gelled broth)

Also, mulled cider and hard cider, because she promised Jono ~~and doesn't know he's holed up with no head tonight~~.

Sheba loved her some pork belly. No one else wanted any, right?

Oh, don't worry, she'd restrain herself from taking all of it.

Mostly.

It was always good to see someone properly appreciating her food, so Hanna approached to start a conversation with this new student, at which point her nose informed her... "Ah. Ms Priestly, is it? Have you made much Japanese food yourself?"

"Sheba," Sheba offered. "I'm apparently a little less shy about my first name than my male counterpart. I've dabbled, a little. One of my best friends is from Tokyo, so if nothing else, I had to teach myself how to cook the sweet stuff."

"I'm afraid I don't even know what his first name is," Hanna confessed. "My aunt was from Japan, and I confess a fondness for the cuisine."

"I could actually tell you," Sheba said. "But if he's that secretive of it, it'd almost be a betrayal." She shrugged. "Japan does food really well. I managed to miss it on my Asian tour of learning street food, but I've made it out there a time or two to visit Momoko."

"Ah, I didn't realize you meant Momoko! Her appreciation of food is very gratifying," Hanna confessed with a smile.

"Right up to the point where you try to get her to eat a vegetable," Sheba said. "She swears that between me and her boyfriend, we're going to make her allergic to sugar. Because I told her she should have a real banana instead of artificial banana flavor ice cream."

Hanna shook her head. "I hadn't discovered that yet; when we met, I was bringing desserts to a party."

"She's got the metabolism of a humming bird," Sheba said fondly. "And pretty much the diet to match."

"Maybe we should hang a plastic flower of sugar water by her home?" Hanna suggested, laughing.

"And now I know what to get her for her next birthday," Sheba said, laughing in return. "Something bright, and totally kawaii."

"I have a feeling she would adore it," Hanna answered. "And not just because it's from a friend."

"Now I'll have to look up if there are any hummingbirds in El Paso." Not that the lack of them would stop her from going through with the gift.

Pork belly was safe from Jack. He was making up for it by taking a triple order of the fried vegetables and as much of the tuna as he could manage without seeming greedy.

He gave the younger of the two new-to-him women in the class a sidelong look. "Excuse me, but did Dr. Lecter call you Ms. Priestly?"

"That she did," Sheba said. "But you can call me Sheba. How's it going, Jack?"

"Fine," Jack said automatically. "Except for how some weeks I have absolutely no idea what's going on on this island. I've met you?"

He was intrigued, not upset.

"Well, in my history we have. I suppose we might not've in this one. Most folks who ought to know have been telling me I'm supposed to be a boy, around here."

Jack's eyebrows went up, but if he wasn't inclined to argue. First, he'd seen too much on the island. Second, the woman teaching the class provided strong evidence such things could happen.

"I see," he said, and drew a breath. "How's Dinah taking it?"

"Well, after we worked out that it wasn't her having a concussion, there was a little bit of weird and wibble, but we've got it worked out. It's nice to know we'd still be as tight even if we weren't the same gender."

The food was the best part of this class, but Atticus took the tuna tartare with a little trepidation. He tugged on his amulet for a moment to get a better look at their teacher's aura and while it was reassuring to know it was still Hannibal, the female body was... surprising to say the least.

And distracting because she was pretty hot now. Thanks, island.

"This looks delicious, as always," he said.

"Thank you." Hanna smiled and nodded at him. "Not used to raw fish?" she asked. She'd caught the hesitation, if not the reason for it.

"Honestly, no. I'm not a big sushi person," Atticus admitted. "But I'll eat anything with avocado on it." After a moment, he added, "Can I ask if you're feeling all right?"

Hanna raised an eyebrow at him. "That's a different way of asking if I'm supposed to be female."

"I was trying to be subtle. And maybe non-offensive," Atticus said. "But I feel better knowing I'm not the first one to ask. I know this sort of thing happened before around here."

"Hardly offensive," she waved it off. "Tiresome, perhaps. To my mind, I have always been female, so having my friends and colleagues gape at me is strange, but I can't fault the impulse if you remember me otherwise."

"Really? That's intriguing, to say the least. At least it's not strange for you that way," Atticus said. "Annoying, to be reminded of it by everyone, but less stressful for you. And you still have your important skills," he added, with a little lift of his plate. "Not that your teaching isn't good too. But this is better."

"Thank you," she answered with a smile. "And honestly, the island has played its tricks before and made all of us men - or all the men, women - while leaving us knowing we should be the other gender." She shrugged. "Apart from the initial awkwardness, I found it more fascinating than stressful."

"I think that might say a lot about you," Atticus said. "You weren't by any chance a scientist before you came here, were you?"

"Did you miss the 'Doctor' in front of my name?" Hanna asked him dryly. "I'm both a surgeon and a psychiatrist."

"In my defense, there are a lot of people running around with 'Doctor' in front of their name who probably shouldn't be," Atticus said with a laugh. "But wow, that's very impressive." And also gave Atticus the notion that he probably needed to watch what he said, talking to a shrink and all.

"I can't argue that point," Hanna answered with a smirk. "In which case I should answer that yes, I am of a rather scientific bent."

Pfft. It wasn't like she'd try and get inside his head and maybe use anything she found!

Wait.

Before or after class, she's there!

OMG, Monday nights kill me. *FLOP*
