Devil's Nest, Monday, 03/31

Tiny had a nice tall Bloody Mary -- heavy on the actual blood -- waiting for Jack when he got to work today. He was a thoughtful bartender that way. The scent didn't sicken a werewolf the way it would have a human, but it still made Jack's stomach do a tiny flip.

He knew the island had done far worse things to other people, and he knew he'd been through much worse than a few days as a vampire. This was just -- nothing. Another chance to play the hero, another time to get away all right. Another chance to worry about how much worse it could have all been.

Still, his shoulders sagged as he set up a handwritten sign outside the club.

Éponine came in and flung herself down onto a barstool as carelessly as if she'd somehow skipped out on the past couple of months, but her face gave her away; the haunted look that had faded out of her eyes a bit over the past year and change was a little stronger again. She gave him a brief, halfhearted smile.

"Does that sign go for those of us who aren't of age yet, under the circumstances?"

She didn't care much one way or the other if it did, and the way she was slurring her words slightly suggested that she'd already gotten started anyway.

"I'm only teasing you, monsieur," Éponine reassured him. "It isn't as if it's any trouble for me to run round to Caritas."

Which she probably ought to at some point soon, and check in on Kenzi.

"I'm well," she went on, lying like it was second nature (because it was). "S'pose you made it through to the end of that little trip the other day, and didn't go wandering off through any doors?"

"At the fifth door," Éponine said, visibly annoyed with herself -- still -- for letting herself get duped. "Stupid of me, really, after seeing what happened to the others."

That was when what Jack said about the reason for the entire mess seemed to sink in, and she let out a derisive laugh. "That's what all this nonsense was about? That's a bad job, dragging all of us into it whether we liked it or not."

It was thoroughly hypocritical of her to scoff, considering that whole plot to lure Marius to the barricade. Then again, maybe she had that in mind.

She gave him a small half-smile; she still thought it had been stupid of her, but it was nice of him to say otherwise.

"And that's all that matters in the end, I suppose, isn't it? No more of things appearing out of nowhere, trying to bite our heads off or cut us into bits or anything like that, and us back to normal? I'm glad you lot are persuasive."

She seemed a bit pensive, though, and almost sympathetic. "Those must have been some awfully heavy debts, that's for certain, for him to go to all that trouble."

Now that Derek was back to being human... shaped... he was at the bar to check on Jack. Subtly. Yeah. That was totally his M.O. as he took a seat at the bar.

It was how they showed it.

"Coffee." He'd been deprived.

You could tell a lot about a place by the character of its bars. This one looked a bit more Eliot's style than the other one, but that sign out front. . . .

"You need to bribe people in this town with booze to share about their day?"

"You take the 'bartender as therapist' trope very seriously, don't you," Eliot said.

Eliot nodded slowly. "Just visiting," he said. "Relocated to Baltimore from Portland, getting the lay of the land."

Somehow, he was getting the feeling this place might actually beat out Portland on "weird".

Eric was there to shamelessly eavesdrop on your trauma shamelessly eavesdrop on your trauma while drinking a Bloody Mary because Jack's had looked good.
