Victor almost skipped out on work this week, but in the end he needed the money and a reason to leave his room. So here he was, trying to repair some small appliances that had gotten smashed during encounters with rampaging something-or-others.
Victor knew that what he'd been through was far from the worst the island had done. But he still missed the guy he'd been, or thought he was, a week before. He had a mother. He had college plans. He didn't have the constant fear of one day becoming evil as a drumbeat to his every thought. He didn't think he was special, and in a way that made him special.
Sometimes, he thought as he twisted a wire into place, it was freeing not to know the truth.
