Stark Industries, Wednesday, 04/23

Victor wasn't really the sentimental type most of the time, but he couldn't stop thinking about how this was his last time in the repair shop. On Saturday, he was going to graduate; Monday or Tuesday, he'd pack up his stuff and portal back to L.A. The shop had been his constant for almost two years -- he'd gone to work there when he was in love, when his heart was broken, when the island was insane (again), when he didn't even really know who he was. It had seen him wear a ballgown and turn into a pony. It was home almost as much as his dorm room was.

He spent the day sorting through bits of metal and wire, determined to leave the shop as neat as he could for the next guy.

Since she at least knew who was working here today, Maddie stopped in with a bag from JGOB and asked, "Do you want a muffin? It looks like they gave me an extra."

"I always want a muffin," Victor told her, with a quick smile of greeting. "Hey. Thanks for thinking of me."

Victor accepted the muffin and started picking away the paper. "Decent," he said. "It's my last day at the shop, so that's a little weird. You sticking around after graduation?"

"Yeah. Don't really have anyplace to go till I turn 18," Maddie said with a shrug. "You're leaving right away?"

"Not, like, the second the ceremony's over, but in a few days," Victor clarified. "I'm just feeling way done with high school. Seems like there's more for me back in L.A. But I why you'd stay here if you aren't 18 yet."

"If I could, I'd be back in California, too. But until I'm old enough to teach at Avengers Academy it's apparently too dangerous for me to be there without my powers." There was so much eyerolling to go along with that statement. "Sucks."

Victor sympathetically rolled his eyes in return.

"Yeah, that makes sense," he concluded sarcastically. "Seems to me that if they're going to trust you to take care of kids, without powers, in a couple months, they should trust you to take care of yourself now."

"Exactly. I mean, Hawkeye doesn't have powers and he does just fine, why can't I?" Maddie said. "I'm so glad you get this."

"Take Iron Man out of his suit, and he's just a really smart guy," Victor said in agreement. "And no problem. Seriously, there are so many heroes without powers it shouldn't be an issue."

He chewed on his thumbnail and added, "Different topic, but is anybody from the Academy coming to see you graduate? 'Cause my version of Dr. Pym said he'd try to come." Victor was maybe a little excited about this.

"Everyone's kind of busy right now. I didn't really want to bother them. Brandon and Jeannie are doing actual stuff, I haven't really heard from anyone else." Probably because Ken was dead by now and Jenny had other things on her mind. "It's be really cool for your Dr. Pym to show, though."

"Yeah, wouldn't it?" Victor agreed. (He was even thinking about bugging his kind-of-grandfather about a job if he showed up, but that was about four steps ahead of what he was ready to tell anybody.) "And I didn't really ask my friends either. Seems like a long way to come just to watch me get a piece of paper."

"Exactly. The important thing is they're cutting us loose. I don't need anybody to see me in a stupid outfit and walking a lot." She didn't really expect that anything weird would happen, no. "I'd kinda just rather enjoy my last weekend ever as a student."

"It'd probably seem scarier to me if I wasn't still stuck on the thought of never having to do homework again," Maddie admitted.
