The Magic Box, Thursday

Okay, if pressed, Rinoa might admit that half the reason she had bought this shop was so that she had free reign over those big musty magic tomes in the back. She was doing research here, all right? Her world didn't seem to know much about sorceresses. Her pet theory was that every time a sorceress caused a war, people destroyed all the useful helpful information about nice, normal sorceresses out of some kind of panic.

Anyway. Rinoa was opening the shop today, and sitting behind the counter browsing a few of those thick books. Maybe taking notes now and then.

Flash had been getting used to the town the past few days, and he was finally ready to check out the magic shop. He was just going to ask some basic questions today. Nothing too pointed. He was going to play it safe and not blow his cover in his first week.

He rolled into the store and gave a smile to the woman behind the counter. "Hi there."

"Hey!" Rinoa said, greeting her customer with a bright smile. "Welcome to the Magic Box. If you're looking for, like, card tricks and the like, there are some up front. More serious mojo is near the back. Oh, and in case you're new around here, yes, magic is real. What can I do for you?"

(*headdesk* I got distracted writing class and FORGOT TO PING BACK. I am the literal worst ever.)

"Well, you just answered the first thing I was going to ask," Flash said. "You know, a guy who's new in town hears some things and gets curious."

"Are you from a world where there isn't any magic?" Rinoa asked. "Or, I mean, it's not real? It can be a bit of a weird adjustment, coming here. It's usually safe, though. Nothing to worry about."

Usually nothing to worry about, but she didn't feel like splitting hairs with the new guy.

"Oh, no, we have magic. But it's usually guys in giant capes fighting demons from other dimensions," Flash said. "And I'm pretty sure the magic shops are better hidden than this one. Either that, or they just don't have any in Queens."

"Superheroes?" Rinoa asked, tilting her head to picture it. "Somehow superheroes always end up dressing funny, around here. Or maybe I only noticed the dressed-funny ones, and the normal ones off saving the world just don't catch that much attention."

Said the girl dating a guy wearing red assbelts.

"Fandom's not really a place where a magic shop needs to hide," she explained. "Although I'm still figuring out what a lot of this is. I mean, my magic doesn't use skink root. How am I going to tell if it's expired?"

"Maybe it stops stinking?" Flash suggested. He had no idea what a skink was, so that sounded way too much like 'stink root' to him. "And technically, I don't think Doctor Strange is a superhero. His press calls him 'Master of the Mystic Arts.' Whatever that means."

Intriguing thought. The skink root did have an unpleasant odor to it. Maybe when it stopped smelling bad, that meant it wasn't working any more.

"It certainly doesn't sound like a superhero name," she agreed. "'Doctor Strange.' Why not just call yourself Professor Weirdo."

Because 'Professor Weirdo' was probably not allowed within five hundred feet of public schools.

"He has press?" She had to admit: a little impressed. "Maybe he's the one who summons the demons in the first place, just so he can get rid of them and show-off. I wouldn't trust a guy calling himself Strange."

"It's the guy's real name. He was a super famous surgeon before he got into the magic thing," Flash said. "He's one of the few guys who doesn't use a fake name."

Well, that did change things a little.

"I suppose, with a name like 'Strange,' flashy capes and talking up Mystical Arts are really the way to go," she said. "At least he's not faking the 'doctor' part of it. Speaking of names, mine's Rinoa. I bought this shop a couple of months ago."
