For some reason, today's shipment had come in in pieces. Which meant that Aeryn had to go through everything, figure out what went to what, and reassemble the weapons correctly.

So basically she was just having the best day ever.

No, seriously.

Anakin was at loose ends this week but didn't want to off the island too long in case Sith returned.

Thus the loitering at a heavily armed store.

"That looks like fun," he said, smiling.

"It's good practice," Aeryn said distractedly, finishing assembling this one before finally looking up. "Did you need something?"

"I don't know," Anakin said. "I haven't fired a projectile weapon that wasn't a paint gun in a while. Do you have suggestions?"

What he got in response was a fairly detailed list of the ones she found acceptable (if primitive). Look, Aeryn didn't have a lot to do in this town.

"What are you going to use it for?" she asked.

"Target practice," Anakin said. "The occasional island invasion."

"That happens occasionally?" She'd thought things like dinosaurs would be a one-time thing.

"Three times a year or so," Anakin said, "with some weird stuff on weekends that doesn't always need to be shot."

"I have a feeling I'd prefer the things that needed to be shot," Aeryn admitted.

She would.

"Definitely," Anakin agreed with a rueful smile. "There's a weekend about once a year where I think I'm the patriarch of a large family that rules this island with an iron fist thanks to the diamond mine fortune that completely doesn't exist."

Aeryn's face looked a little like it didn't know what to do with that.

"Of course, why wouldn't you?"

"There's also an underground market smuggling raw fish and people with caffeine addictions who die of it," Anakin said, shaking his head. "It's...special."

"Of all the towns I had to get stuck in, it had to be the crazy one." Yes, of course it did, Aeryn, are you new?

"At least most of the people aren't ugly?" Anakin offered.

"That hadn't really occurred to me." Oh, right, Anakin hadn't known an Aeryn this repressed.

Anakin smiled. "It certainly doesn't make everything better, but it's a nice bonus. And most people here know how to defend themselves."

"I'd hope all of them would, when you get attacked three times a cycle," Aeryn said.

"Well, some of them are children," Anakin said, "and on many planets, children aren't taught self-defense from infancy."

A major oversight, Anakin's tone said.

"Then they should learn quickly," Aeryn said.

"Most of them do," Anakin said. "Some like hiding."

"That's completely unhelpful. What good does that do?"

Someone was raised in the military...

Anakin shrugged. "I have no idea, but it makes them feel better?"

"I'd think getting rid of something that was threatening them would make them feel even better than that."

It was cathartic, let's me honest.

"I certainly think so," Anakin said with a grin.

"Then thank you for making sense," she said.

"You're very welcome," Anakin replied. "You've found the gym, right?"

"And their range," Aeryn nodded. Who cared that they had one here? More ranges for everyone! "It's better than what I had before."

Even if she had no idea what to do with things like treadmills.

"We need a paintball game again here," Anakin declared. "It happened a few years ago. My grandson--timelines get weird here--found himself a sniper spot on the top of a roof and took people out from there. I was so proud."

"That is the smartest way to go about it," Aeryn said approvingly. The rest she still didn't really get yet.

"Maybe this shop could sponsor another contest this summer," Anakin mused. "You shoot people but with paint so that no real damage is done."

"You'd have to talk to Ron about that. But I warn you, you might be in for a lecture about needing to use real American weapons with real American bullets." She was still peeved over the pulse rifle thing.

Anakin rolled his eyes. "My teacher used to say that blasters themselves were uncivilized and crude. He only ever used a lightsaber--a sword made of energy that was the symbol and weapon of our Order."

"Sounds like a snob," said the pistol fan.

"He was a bit of one," Anakin admitted. "He also didn't really like flying."

"Some people don't. That's how you know who's not suited for a career as a pilot," Aeryn said.

Anakin snorted. "Too bad we spent so much time flying, then."
