The Perk, Friday evening

Ah, Fridays. After a hard day of decorating her office and shooting Nerf darts at her new co-workers when she was able to, it was Coffee Time. Or rather, mega mocha double-chocolate cinnamon frappuccino time.

Ahhhhhh.

Jalian was at loose ends this evening as most of the others, and so was walking through the town restlessly. Most of it seemed dark and empty now, the exception being this place, whatever it was.

She stepped in curiously, looking around.

Kenzi was happily seated in a booth, well, on the table, because the baristas couldn't make her stop doing that, sipping away at her drink. She noticed the new girl-- well, she was probably new-- walk in and look a little lost.

Also, she had awesome hair.

"Hey," she called out. "Welcome to the Perk. The baristas are too cool to say hi. So hi."

Jalian looked over at her. "Baristas?"

Various of the named people were leaning back, texting, or looking offended at this. One of them did, though, sigh, "WhatcanIgetyou?" and point at the menu.

"Them." Kenzi pointed. "Our valued wait-staff."

Jalian frowned. "What are they waiting for?"

"For you to order a drink. So they can disdainfully mix it up, and then make a cute design in the foam." Kenzi held up her frappuccino. "Unless you get frozen coffee deliciousness like this." She grinned. "I'm Kenzi, I recommend anything here. Except the service."

Someone playing Angry Birds on their phone gave Kenzi the finger from behind the counter.

Jalian eyed Kenzi's drink - if it was a drink - skeptically. "Jalian d'Arsennette y ken Selvren. What is.." she parsed "frozen" and "delicious", "...coffee?"

"Cool name. Cool hair. You don't know what coffee is?" Aaaack! Kenzi looked thoughtful, then held out her drink. "Here, have a taste. It's yummy and gives you an energy buzz. Where are you from with no coffee?"

"California," Jalian answered. She eyed the drink, then tentatively sipped it.

Her eyes went wide at the sweet and bitter taste. "That is coffee?"

"Uh-hunh! Well, with some other stuff. Ice, some cinnamon. Chocolate syrup. You should get one, you got money?" Kenzi felt like she owed it to Jalian to make sure she could get one, now that she'd been a Coffee Pusher.

"I have no money," Jalian answered. The concept still amused her. "Does nobody here use barter?"

"Between friends, sure. And there's a couple shops that'll trade stuff you bring in for other stuff, or cash." Kenzi considered, then decided. "Look, my treat, if you want, this time. Most people either have money from home that they exchange, or they get jobs, though."

She bounced off the table and over to the counter and said, "Same, for Jalian, make it a small, 'kay?" She looked over at Jalian and said, "So, your California, not much like the one here, I'm guessing. They're all about the benjamins."

"The strange male at the clothing place mentioned jobs," Jalian noted. "I have never been to the California in this timeline. What are benjamins?"

"Ohh, time stuff... yeah, I know nothing about how that works." Kenzi leaned back against the counter, then pulled out a couple dollar bills, stuffing a one into the tip jar, and handing a five over to Jalian. "Money! Which I get paid for working at Luke's Diner. And Caritas. There's a whole complicated thing where the money is supposed to be traded in to the gov'ment for gold or something, but I have no idea how it works. Benjamins are the high-roller bills, they have a picture of Benjamin Franklin on them-- he anybody in your timeline?"

"I would not know." Jalian rolled her eyes. "It isn't my job to keep track of the males." Thankfully.

"Do you know anybody named Karla?" Look, as far as she knew there was no California in Karla's world, but hey! "From Glacia? 'Cause that sounds just like her."

The barista handed over another frappuccino and Kenzi handed it to Jalian, then paid for it when the barista mumbled the price. "Keep the non-existent change... Go ahead, see if you really like it."

"I'm unfamiliar with her." Jalian sniffed the thing, took another sip, then a larger one. "I've never had anything like this before!" It was definitely good, though!

Kenzi beamed and toasted her with her own, then sat down in the booth again. "So where in California are you from? And if you're not in charge of the 'males', who is?"

"It is..." Jalian pictured the map in her head. "If the geography will not change too much, a little south of a place that is now Soledad." She snorted. "And not me; that's all I care about. You're from here?"

Kenzi snickered at that.

"Kinda know where that is. I haven't been out to California myself, though." Kenzi took another happy sip, and said, "Sorta-kinda. I mean, I'm from Canada, and this time line. But who knows if the Baltimore across the causeway is mine or not. It gets confusing."

"I'm still uncertain if this is my timeline or not. I do not think it is." She grimaced. "Where is Canada? And Baltimore?"

"Ohhhh man. Yeah, so, Baltimore is the big city on the other side of the causeway. Most of the time, anyway." Slurrrrp. "Canada's the country north of the United States. Which, uh, is the country you're in now, for the most part. Although Fandom's pretty much its own wacky anarchy answerable to nobody but Mother Nature, Father Time, and Total Randomness."

Jalian frowned at the names. "Are those people or concepts?"

Kenzi started to answer, then paused, frowning. "You know, I was gonna say concepts? But around here, it's... hard to be sure."
