Devil's Nest, Monday, 06/02

Tiny and the DJ had decided this was "games night" at the Devil's Nest. Because they were Tiny and the DJ and this was Fandom, that meant something rather unique: Tapes of a Quidditch world cup played on the TVs at the bar, and a different vintage board game had been placed atop every table. As for the bar, that was taken up with a giant dominoes pathway.

Jack wasn't quite sure how he was supposed to serve drinks without knocking it over, but he resolved to do his best.

Kaidan had to blink a couple of times at the television before completing his walk towards Jack. "Uh... what are they playing, exactly?"

"I don't know but they're flying on brooms and there's a lot of chasing," Jack said, probably not telling Kaidan anything he didn't know. "I can't figure out the rules. Maybe there aren't any. People loony enough to fly around on brooms are loony enough to do all sorts of things."

Apologetically, he added, "If you want a beer, I should serve you at a table. I'm worried we'll disturb the dominoes if we stay at the bar."

Kaidan shot the dominoes a wry look. "I can, uh, see that," he said. "You wanna grab one too and sit down? You look like you could use a break."

"Not a bad idea at all," Jack sighed, and gingerly retrieved two mugs of a decent lager before going to a table. He moved the game aside almost without looking at it.

"Sorry," he said, half-apologetic. "I just feel a bit outnumbered today. How are you? How's Portalocity?"

Kaidan gave the game a brief, confused glance - but that was kind of par for the course with everything about the bar's decor today - and only snapped his attention back to Jack mid-sentence.

"Uh, it's fine," he said. "Finally burned through all the paperwork and I haven't had anyone yell at me in at least seven hours."

"Is that a record?" Jack asked, in mock amazement. "They must have finally put better snacks in their layover lounges."

"I'm starting to figure out how the Alliance got that great deal on Portalocity trips," Kaidan admitted. "Volunteering marines to take the abuse--"

There was way too much stuff sitting around this bar for a distractable guy like Kaidan.

"...Hey, I think my great-aunt had a copy of that," he said. "Nice tiles."

"You should tell them verbal abuse still qualifies for combat pay," Jack advised, looking over to see what Kaidan was looking at. "Which one?"

"That one," Kaidan said, pointing at a game one table over. "Never got that one. But she loved it."

Jack reached over to scoop it up. "The box makes my eyes bleed," he observed, reading the back. "Looks like the kind of thing you'd play on your phone. I don't see much point either."

"Yeah, even back then, there were omni-tool games a lot more fun and sophisticated than that," Kaidan agreed. "But she was always an odd one. Loved her vintage."

Admittedly, Kaidan's great-aunt's vintage was still Jack's several-generations-in-the-future, but...

Jack quirked a smile. "I'm convinced the whole world's sense of style went mad in the decades I skipped," he volunteered. "Now isn't so bad, but things from the 1970s and 1980s -- I'm glad I would have been dead or too old to care, if I'd had to live through them for real."

"Then if I were you, I'd avoid the 2050s, too," Kaidan said thoughtfully. "... and the 2170s. I was around for those, and-- uh, there are some things you don't want to do to plaid."

"Well, plaid," Jack said thoughtfully. "If you aren't Scottish or a lumberjack, it usually shouldn't be part of your wardrobe to start with."

To go by his wardrobe, Jack didn't believe in patterns besides the thinnest pinstripes.

Kaidan basically lived in Alliance uniforms and t-shirts, so he wasn't really in a position to argue one way or another. "Oh, the stuff they came up with last decade I don't think even a lumberjack would be caught wearing."

"They still have lumberjacks?" Jack asked. "They haven't come up with ... I don't know, giant robots that cut down trees for you?"

"Sure," Kaidan said, settling back down in front of his lager. "But those robots need people to manage them, too."

[bitten_notshy]

"And if robots ever manage other robots, humanity would become completely obsolete," Jack said, and took a sip of his beer. "So it's a good thing we still need lumberjacks in the future."
