Devil's Nest, Monday, 06/16

The thing about spending weekend nights giving his wolf form free rein in the woods was that it meant his human form was damn exhausted, and more than a little sore. Werewolf healing couldn't quite touch this kind of bone-deep tired.

Jack had slept most of it off by the time he got to work on Monday, but bits of the weariness still crept in. (He avoided sitting down, because when he did he didn't want to get up.) He brewed himself an extra-strong pot of coffee before starting on his work.

Rather than sitting at home and being worried and blah, Kitty decided it was time to get out for a while. "Hey there," she said, taking a seat at the bar.

"Hey back," Jack said, smiling slightly. Kitty got a smile even when he was tired. "How are you? Can I get you anything?"

"Rum and Coke?" she smiled back. "I'm okay. How are you doing?" She maybe noticed the tired.

"Fine," Jack said, moving slowly to fix the drink.

Then, a bit grudgingly: "Full moon was this weekend. Derek's still in Beacon Hills, so..."

So he'd spent it hunting teal deer in the preserve. As you do.

"Ah. Is it harder to go through all that on your own?" she wondered. She didn't usually see him right after the full moon to know if he was like this after all of them.

"It's not if I'm not an idiot," Jack said frankly. "I have enough control not to be a danger, but not enough to remember I still need to do things like sleep and not chase after deer all night. Usually Derek keeps an eye on me."

"So today means all the coffee," she said. "Makes sense."

"Alllll the coffee," Jack repeated with a firm nod. "And a solemn promise to my aging bones not to try this again. Have you ever worn yourself out with your powers, or does it not work that way for you?"

"It can happen," she said. "I can phase other people and things with me, but if it's too much mass, it'll tire me out afterwards. Same thing with certain materials, if I'm trying to pass through something really dense. Luckily it doesn't happen much. It's a pain."

Give it a few months, she'd really have something to complain about.

"Literally, if the way I feel is anything to go by," Jack said. "I suppose I should be lucky to remember I still have limits. I heal so fast these days I'd forgotten about them."

"Then this is just a learning experience," she said. "How long does it take you to bounce back?"

"I'll find out," Jack answered. "It's been a day and a half. To be fair I am feeling better, just not all the way."

He was also being a tiny bit whiny.

"You probably could have called off," she pointed out.

"I could, but then Tiny puts my face on the dartboard," Jack said. "Besides, all I'd be doing at home is checking my phone every ten minutes to see if Derek's got an update for me. Staying busy is better."

"Have you heard anything?" she asked, a little quickly because she'd maybe been dying to ask that.

"Nothing worth talking about," Jack said, like maybe he'd been dying to tell her. "'Still in Beacon Hills. Did you feed Joe?'. Stuff like that. I think he doesn't want to say much until it's over. Have you?"

Kitty shook her head. "Stiles called me before he went into the institution, but that was over a week ago. I texted Derek, but never heard back."

"I haven't heard from stiles since this started," Jack answered. "I saw Derek last week, but he's just wrecked. I worry about him. Since then, just the nothing texts, and I think only because I made him promise."

He found a knife and the limes for the garnish tray. "I'd go out there now if I knew I could do it without fucking everything up worse."

"Yeah, same. Stiles was very insistent that if he showed up on my doorstep to just run, so I doubt running towards the situation would help any," Kitty said. "I'm trying to convince myself silence means Stiles is still safely locked up and everything's fine."

That was not working, no.

"Right," Jack said, starting to saw through a lime because doing violence to something felt good. "No news is good news, isn't it? And if Stiles was cured, I doubt we'd be their first thought."

"Exactly. And there is always a way to de-possess someone," Kitty nodded. "So even if it's not fixed yet, it will be."

"They were trying to figure out if a bite would work, last I heard," Jack volunteered. "The trick is the chance it would kill him. And the fact Stiles likes being human. But other than that, it's perfect."

So, not so much.

Kitty stared for a second.

"Okay, there is always another way to de-possess someone."

"If you know any tell me," Jack said helplessly. "I don't. Though I'm not exactly an expert on Japanese fox demons, either."

"In my experience, it's all about taking away the host body, or threatening it so the spirit has nowhere to go," Kitty said. "But I'm not sure I'd want to try something like that on a trickster demon."

"That doesn't strike me as the best idea if they all want to stay alive," Jack nodded. "What about exorcisms? They're flimflam at home, but maybe in other worlds they do something."

"I don't have any real experience there," Kitty admitted. "I've seen religion work against vampires where I come from, but it's not really the same thing, and I don't know how things work there in Beacon Hills."

"Religion does nothing against vampires at home," Jack told her. "But more to the point, I don't know how things work in Beacon Hills, either."

He set a lime aside by the rum and coke he'd use to fix Kitty's drink. He needed one for himself now. "I suppose we just wait."

"Woo," Kitty said, sounding totally thrilled.

"I'm as thrilled by it as you are," Jack deadpanned, and mixed himself a strong drink to show exactly how thrilled that might be.

At some point once the sun had set, Allie turned up in the bar. She was curious about how much Jack remembered of their hunt Friday night.

"Hey you."

"Hey," Jack said, going pink. "How are you? Anything interesting happen lately?"

Maybe she'd gotten amnesia since Friday night! It was possible!

Well that answered that question, Allie realized with a grin.

"Tell me why we haven't done that before?"

"Oh, god,don't remind me," Jack groaned. "I shouldn't ... enjoy myself quite that way."

She raised an eyebrow and pulled up a chair at the bar. "Why? Who does it hurt?"

"No one except people particularly bonded to the deer, I suppose, but that's not the point," Jack told her. "I'm meant to be better than that."

"I like the deer well enough, but I'm not going to shed any tears because you had a few for dinner." But considering Allie spent a lot of time keeping tight control over her own predatory nature, she thought she had an idea what Jack meant. "Personally I thought you were magnificent."

"Magnificent?" Oh, go on, Allie. Feed that ego. "Well, I -- I mean, I do my best."

In a lower tone, he added, "It felt good."

"Because you weren't fighting it," Allie pointed out. "How often do you actually run like that?"

"It's been a long time," Jack said hesitantly. "I did it once last year,I think. It's not properly safe."

"I can see where that could make you worry," she nodded. "I wondered myself, but I figured if it looked like there was going to be a problem, I'd tackle you and we'd go round instead."

Jack raised an eyebrow. "You think you'd come out of it all right?"

Allie shrugged. "I'd probably take more then a few hits." Mostly because she wouldn't want to hurt him. "But unless you got really lucky and managed to rip my heart out or take my head off, it's nothing I can't recover from."

"I'd try to keep enough control not to rip your heart out," Jack said, grinning a bit. "Though the word there might be 'try.'"

"And I'll try not to knock you around too badly if you get feisty," she grinned back. "But I'd buy you a coffee the next morning to make up for it."
