Luke's, Saturday

Who was Luke? Luke was a smoky bar on a rainy summer evening filled with the wail of a lonely sax. Luke was a classy dame with a box of matches and a story to tell. Luke was money to burn and living with regret in the light of a sun that never, ever rose.

. . . Okay, honestly, Pinkie had no idea who Luke was. The name was already on this joint when she bought it, and she thought it gave the place an aura of mystery, so she kept it.

Whoever he was, Luke's name was on one classy establishment, boasting live music and the highest quality caviar and bubbly (soda, that is, at least 'til Pinkie knows you ain't a squealer). If you're feeling lucky, there's a poker game or two to be had -- at least right up until the moment the cops show up.

Ricki wrapped her mink around herself and beamed at the waiter. Ginger ale? Fine. She was just making appearances here in the lounge, anyway. She needed to get to the back room.

During a slow spell in the coat check -- and to be honest, there weren't that many coats to check in July, so it had been a slow night to start with -- Alana wandered into the lounge to have some refreshments and listen to the music. She was scouting out the club for any guys who looked like they could show her a good time.

Ricki had no head for blackjack. That didn't stop her from playing it, obsessively. It was such a thrill, and sometimes she got a lucky Ace to hit just the score she wanted.

More often, though, she busted out.

Good thing she'd brought plenty of money to play with. Now, was there a roulette table around here?

(ANYBODY ELSE WANNA GAMBLE???)

"Whaddya doing here, dollface?" Barry "The Brain" Ween said taking a seat across from Ricki. "Seems to me a girl like you needs to be in a classier joint than this?"

Ricki laughed. "Nice line," she said. "Anyone ever fall for it? I'm taken, buster, so move on. The coat-check girl's a looker."

Ricki had possibly misread his intent, yes.

"A bottle of the good stuff, Pinkie." Kenzi made a gorgeous widow, the kind that made people say how tragic everything was, but at least her dead husband had been happy. "My husband's dead!"

It was a good trope, a trope you could count on during a stormy night when your husband was suddenly dead and you were all alone and approximately $120 billion dollars richer.

Kenzi dabbed at her eyes with a black lace handkerchief, and sniffed. "Thank you. It was so sudden! He was so young! And beautiful! And we were just married last week!"

"Anything special you need me for tonight, boss?" Alana asked, chin up bravely as she stood before the pony. She'd seen plenty of trouble -- maybe more than her fair share -- but she was here, in a classy joint, with a classy job, and she'd do whatever it took to hold on to it and maybe one day claw her way up.

"You got it," Alana nodded crisply, and then fretted. "Oh, gosh, do you think the heat's coming down on us tonight?"

"All right! Nobody move!" Vic shouted as she entered Luke's. "Police! This is a raid!

"Don't play games with me, pony," Vic said pointing at Pinkie. "You think I don't know what's going on here? You may pay the other flatfoots to look the other way but I'm not on your payroll Pinkie."

Aside from a photograph, the client had given Momoko only one other lead: an old postcard depicting a street in this sleepy burg. A street with a joint on it called Luke's. Apparently Momoko's mark had been fond of this place once, so there was a chance he'd returned.

Momoko took a small breath and then stepped inside, every inch an innocent young lady looking for someone in all the wrong places...

Nothing at all like the dangerous 'femme fatale for a fee' on the hunt that she really was.

"I... " Momoko smiled at the proprietor. "May I have a cup of tea? I've been walking about town so much."

Were her eyes fillling with tear? Yes they were.
