There was something smarmy about her that had Cosette on edge; not even the undisguisedly shady Éponine she remembered from the alternate timeline had acted quite like this, but M. Thénardier certainly had.
She felt a little bit sick, but for all that the notion of just walking away to leave Éponine there didn't sit right with her. It was just . . . a little bit difficult to make herself move, too.
