Hatter was finally ready to get his tea back on the menu. It seemed like that had been enough distance between the evil carnival and his evil self and now so he thought it was a good time. Fortunately for all the oysters here, he wasn't going to be concocting the tea like he had back home especially now that he'd brought some of his own supply back. They'd just have to make due with his excellent tea as is.

Hatter was in and he was talking to his stupid phone about the stupid books he apparently came from. He wanted to find some version that was maybe closer to him then the others he'd already looked over. One that didn't have him partying with some stupid assassin.

After a long class of being shot at, Mara needed a chance to do some recon in town grab a soothing drink. And with one named after her, practically, well, she couldn't resist stopping into the little cafe.

"Hello?" she called. "Do I just seat myself?"

"That's certainly one way you can do it," Hatter called out to her. He hadn't gotten up just yet. "Or, if you're wanting the full fine dining experience, I can get up and show you to a table."

"I only need a cup of tea," Mara said. "I don't really need an experience."

"Well, if a cup of tea's what you need, you're most definitely in the right place," Hatter said, gesturing to his tea specials. "Feel free to come over. None of the staff will bite and neither will I."

Mara laughed. "Back home, that's not always the case. May I try the jade tea?"

Shhh, it amused her.

"You may," Hatter said, getting up and going back behind the counter to get that started. "Any particular reason for that choice today?"

"Jade's my last name," Mara explained. "It caught my attention on the sign."

"A good last name, then," Hatter said, getting started on the tea. "My last name's Hatter. But, that's also my first name and, so far, haven't found any teas named after me."

"I haven't heard of one either," Mara said, "but I'll be on the lookout from now on, just in case."

"You're very kind," Hatter said, giving her a little nod. "Are you new here, then? I don't tend to get oyst -- children into my restaurant. Perhaps I frighten them."

"I'm not easily frightened," Mara said, "but I am new here. I just wanted to see what sort of places were in town--other than stairs." She made a face. "I'm done with the stairs."

With the tea finished, Hatter pushed it across to her and leaned against the counter.

"Not a fan of the stairs, huh?" He nodded. "There are a bloody lot of them, aren't there? You have to wonder what sadist designed this place."

"Someone with calves and thighs made of rock," Mara said, taking a sip and letting out a happy sigh. "This is really good."

"Did you expect it not be?" Hatter asked smugly. "You'll find no better purveyor of tea on this island. If anyone tells you otherwise, they're wrong and you should hit them."

"It's not nice to hit people," Mara said primly, then grinned. "But I'll do it anyway."

"You really saved that with your addendum there," Hatter told her, smiling. "It's perfectly okay to hit people if they deserve it and proclaiming to be a better tea maker than me is a good reason."

"I'll be sure to tell them so," Mara said. "If they're still conscious."

"Is your bark worse than your bite?" Hatter asked because she was tiny, yes.

Mara smiled at him sweetly over the cup of tea. "No."

"For some reason, I don't find myself believing you," Hatter said, smirking.

Mara smirked back. "Sounds like a personal failing to me."

"Ooooh, sassy," Hatter said approvingly. "You're wrong because I don't have personal failings but I like the attitude."

"What a wonderful coincidence," Mara said, sipping more of her tea. "I don't have any personal failings either."

"Well, you are a touch tiny," Hatter said, giving her a look. "Very small in stature."

"That's because you stop growing when you're perfect," Mara said, "and I'm going to get there faster than a lot of other people."

Good try, Mara.

"That's some impressive rationalization there," Hatter said, amused. "You're wrong but I am impressed anyway."

Mara smiled back at him. "I'm not wrong."

"Is that right?" Hatter smirked at her. "Shouldn't you be respecting your elders, tiny oyster?"

Uncertainty flashed in Mara's eyes for a second--had she pushed the teasing too far with this adult?--before she recovered. "Oyster?"

"Slang term," Hatter said, waving a hand. "You're a little too young to understand, tiny person."

Mara wrinkled her nose up. "I'm not that young."

Yes she was.

"How old are you?" Hatter asked. "Ten? Twelve?"

Mara gave him a withering stare. "Fourteen."

"Well, you've really put me in my place," Hatter said, all sarcasm. "You're not young at all. Not even close to being a tadpole."

Mara made another face at him. "I'm old for my years."

"Of course you are," he said obligingly thought he didn't sound like he agreed or believed her.

Mara fake-glared at him over her tea. "So what's it really like here? My fake sibling gave me a briefing packet but that's a lot of stuff to read..."

"Insane," he said succinctly. "Interesting but it's insane. You could be evil tomorrow or you could be stuck outside while tiny sea creatures rain from the sky. I don't know what causes it but this place is bloody strange."

"Why are you still here?" Mara wondered.

"Because I am." That wasn't a reason at all.

"That's not a reason," Mara pointed out.

"It's not?" Hatter shrugged. "Oh well. My reasons are my own, tiny oyster. When I want to leave, I will."

"Fair enough," Mara said, finishing up her tea and reaching for her wallet. "Thank your for the tea and company."
