Taste of Thai, Wednesday Evening

Kira was trying not to be nervous as she and Johnny got settled at their table. It wasn't like this was a serious date - Johnny went on tons of dates - but that was also the problem because he was clearly an expert dater, while Kira was on date number three or four of her life. Still, she was feeling pretty cute today, which went a long way to getting her to stay smiling.

"Have you eaten here before? I feel like I should have tried every place once by now, but I really haven't," she said.

"No, this is actually my first time here," Johnny said. "I don't know how. I love Thai food. Good job picking."

Oh yeah, Kira was putting that one in the win column. "I love Thai food too. Honestly, there's not much food I don't like. I mean, ethnicity-wise. There are a lot of weird foods I don't like much."

"Okay, that demands a follow up question," Johnny laughed. "What level of weird are we talking about? "

"Brussels sprouts," Kira said, making a face. "I don't know why those even exist. Ooh, or things that are too too spicy. My mother makes some dishes that'd burn your insides. Food shouldn't be painful."

"I bet I could take it," Johnny said. "I don't really worry about burning on the inside or the outside."

"You know about the superhero thing, right?" Johnny checked. "I assume I've told everyone by now, but it turns out I've missed a couple people I REALLY thought I would have told. Because that bragging makes way more sense in context."

"I... don't think that came up on our quickie date?" Kira said. "Wait, you're really a superhero? I didn't think that was something people our age could do."

"Damn. I usually hit the point hard within the first minute of meeting a cute girl to impress them," Johnny said. "I think having actual classes has screwed up my game just a tiny bit. But yeah. I have powers. Control fire and heat and stuff. Now pretend you knew that when I said that I don't worry about anything burning and you'll see how clever it was."

"It was very clever," Kira said, "and that's really cool. I mean--that wasn't supposed to be a pun or anything, just--that sounds like fun powers to have. I guess in the name of fairness, I should tell you I have abilities too, sort of."

"We both have powers. Clearly we were meant to be, Kira," Johnny said playfully. "Okay, what do you got?"

"I'm a kitsune," she said. "Like a fox? It's sort of an internal thing, I don't actually turn into a fox or anything. But my reflexes have gotten really fast and lightning doesn't hurt me. I don't know if that'll ever be useful, but it's better than being boring, right?"

"I know a guy like that, but with spiders instead of foxes. And he does have a villain who shoots lightning all over the place," Johnny said. "So you never know. Sounds pretty useful to me."

Kira laughed softly. "I'm kind of hoping to never meet any supervillains. I'd like to just stick to meeting superheroes instead. That seems way safer, and a lot more fun."

"I kind of want to argue the point since beating up a bad guy is so much fun, but I'd rather be here with you instead of fighting one of them," Johnny reasoned. "No reason it shouldn't work the other way, too."

Kira blushed fiercely and had to look down at the table for a moment. "Has anyone ever told you that you know, like, exactly what to say to make girls feel nice?"

"As you might expect, I have heard that," Johnny said. "But since I'm making the effort to be so naturally sweet and wonderful, it's nice to hear that the end result is what I was shooting for."

Okay, the end result he was shooting for was eventual makeouts, but that was further down the line. The main thing was making sure the girl had fun and felt good about herself. It was a gift he could give regardless of whether someone was up for makeouts.

Oh, there would definitely be makeouts in Johnny's future if he kept up the sweetness. "You'd better be careful, or you're going to spoil all the girls here, and the guys might get mad at you."

"That might explain why I don't really have any guy friends," Johnny mused. "Fortunately, the girls around here seem to like me enough to make up for that. Like, as friends, even."

"Female friends are way better anyway," Kira teased. "Some of the guys here are strange." After a moment, she added, "Okay, some of the girls are strange too, but they all seem really nice, and that's what counts."

"Sometimes I think that the nice thing is a trap that someone here is setting," Johnny said. "Everyone's almost too nice. I went to a regular high school for a week once and it was nothing like thia. It's almost suspicious."

"I know, right?" Kira agreed. "I mean, I had some nice people as friends at my last school, but there were some people who were so... bitchy," she said quietly, "and for no good reason too, just because they wanted to be awful."

"Give people like that super powers and they become villains," Johnny said. "Trust me, I've seen it. That's one of the reasons I try not to be a dick most of the time. I have way too many people who'd beat me up if I went that route."

"I bet the girls you've been on dates with would join in. We can't have it on our records that we dated a supervillain. That'd be so awkward," Kira said with a smirk.

"What, you don't like a bad boy?" Johnny asked. "I've heard rumors that girls love them."

"Well, bad boys are kind of fun," Kira admitted, blushing a little more. "But I prefer good guys more."

"And we good boys appreciate that from somebody as sweet as you," Johnny said, raising the glass of water that had totally been brought at some point in a toast.
