Ching Tai, Thursday Evening

Having dinner with Johnny occupied a weird middle ground in Alana's mind -- it wasn't a date exactly, but it also wasn't remotely platonic. Whatever it was, it seemed to be worth looking cute for, so she wore a silky patterned sleeveless top, fitted jeans and high boots. (Also goosebumps, because it was possibly a touch too cold to go out in sleeveless things.)

She poked at her phone idly as she waited for Johnny outside the restaurant. She had a mild addiction to Buzzfeed quizzes.

Johnny didn't have too many fireproof clothes with him in Fandom, but among them were a button down shirt and nice pants, so he looked good as he streaked across the sky like a fireball. As he approached Ching Tai, he lowered toward the ground, extinguished his flame, and dropped into a light trot towards Alana.

Yes, he was doing that just in the name of showing off. "Hey, Alana," he said. "I know it can be tough to keep your hands off me, but you really should. I'm somehow hotter than you've ever seen me."

"But seriously, my clothes need a minute to cool off."

"I don't care," Alana told him. Her phone was forgotten in one hand. (And now she'd probably never find out who she'd be on Full House.) "That was about the best way to make an entrance I've ever seen. Totally worth not being able to hug hello."

She waved instead. "Hello!"

And that was the kind of reaction he was hoping for. Such a show off. "Hello! I'm glad to know you haven't gotten so used to me yet that I can't impress you."

"I think it probably takes a while for you to quit being impressive," Alana told him, moving to pull the door open. "You know. At least a month or two. I might need to see the human comet imitation a couple more times to see if it wears off."

"Remind me about that in a month (Thank you)," Johnny said, being all polite as she opened the door. "After that, the first one of those invasions we get, I'll give you a call before I go out to fight some monsters so you can be super impressed all over again."

"Yeah, but then I'm out with the monsters and I have to shoot at them and risk missing and looking all damsel-y," Alana said, wrinkling her nose. (And throwing in a quick, polite, "No problem" along the way.) "How about you take videos of yourself fighting the monsters and show me later?"

"I'd need to recruit someone to film me," Johnny said once he was fully in the restaurant. "I tried a GoPro camera once. It burned up in about two minutes."

"But I don't think you could possibly look too damsel-y. I mean, you're already talking about shooting them."

Alana smirked at him as the hostess led them to their table. Once they were settled:

"Well, yeah," she said. "I learned to shoot when I was a kid. Besides, the alternative is, like, waving my arms at them and hoping I looked scary."

"Also," she added, snapping her menu open. "They have to start making better cameras for superheroes. Someone should get on that."

"And there's no way you're going to look scary instead of ridiculously hot," Johnny said. "But seriously, that's cool."

"Wait, do you have a regular gun or a laser gun?" He had assumptions about space. Those assumptions included laser guns.

In this case, that assumption would be justified.

"Yeah, it's like an energy pulse," Alana confirmed. "We call them Heartbreakers. But I've used handguns and stuff in class here, too."

Looking at him through her lashes, she added, "And I always like being reminded you think I'm ridiculously hot."

"Well, I only think that because I have eyes," Johnny said with a casual shrug. "I've actually never used a gun. I didn't grow up having any reason to, and now I can throw fireballs.

"I could show you sometime," Alana offered, shoving some stray hairs off her forehead as she thought about how to explain why she knew how to shoot. "See, at home there's this war going on and if you aren't super-smart or super-rich, you're probably going to get drafted. And they like us to be prepared."

"Only if we get to use lasers. I don't care about regular bullets. I can melt those. But lasers are lasers," Johnny said.

He was focusing on that so he wouldn't have to question if another girl he'd slept with was part of an at least sketchy-seeming empire.

Alana shrugged, just as happy not to have to give a lecture on the history of the Landfall-Wreath conflict. "Sure, if you know where to find laser guns on the island. "

"I'm pretty sure there's a weapons shop somewhere," Johnny said. "I'll keep an eye out for it next time I'm flying around."

"Oh, right," Alana dimly recalled. She'd never had a reason to go into it, but she'd noticed the shop too. "Do you do that a lot? Fly around looking at things?"

"I only really look around to make sure I'm not going to crash into anything. I'm usually going too fast to get a really good look at anything," Johnny said. "But I fly a lot. One, because it's so awesome. Two, because it's part of my workout. Since I don't have too many monsters or criminals to fight around here, I have to make sure I stay sharp somehow."

The waiter came by before Alana could do more than nod in response. She ordered vegetable dumplings and chicken with cashews, snapped her menu closed, then turned back to Johnny.

"Makes sense," she said. "You look awesome doing it, too. Guys at home can fly, but that's more like ... flapping around eight feet off the ground."

"No self-generated rocket propulsion?" Johnny laughed. "There are a bunch of fliers where I come from, but there's only a couple guys who can match me for speed and style. One's a god and the other is super rich and built himself flying armor, so both of those are cheating anyway."

"Total cheats," Alana agreed dismissively. "Once you're rich enough to build yourself flying armor, you've kind of taken yourself out of the rankings."

"That's the way I like to look at it," Johnny said. "I knew you'd get it. I don't think I've really ever asked, but can you fly with your wings? I only ask because the one other person I've ever known with wings could, but those things were huge. Like, take up half the restaurant when they were all out kind of huge."

"If I could, I would," Alana told him with a little shrug. "Humanoids aren't that aerodynamic to start with, and I was wingbled when I was a kid. I can flutter like a developmentally delayed chicken if you push me off something, that's about it."

"As fun as that description sounds," Johnny said, the sarcasm in that phrase basically doing a backflip, "I think I'll try to avoid pushing you off of anything. But if you ever want to go for a flight, let me know. I could take you on a quick trip around the island."

"Hey, if you think you can carry me, I'm not going to say no," Alana told him, sounding pretty happy about the idea. "You wouldn't mind if I got airsick, right?"

"If you do, I'm not going to kiss you right away. But otherwise, I wouldn't mind too much. It would still be worth doing," Johnny decided.

"That's really sweet," Alana decided, smiling at him. "So you know,I don't actually get airsick. Or at least I never have,"

"Oh thank god," Johnny said with a sharp exhalation. "I really didn't want to be responsible for any kind of a mess like that somewhere over town."

"I'm wondering if it would kind of hover for a second in a clump or it would fall straight down," Alana said, because she was classy like that.

"Oh my god, I really never want to find out," Johnny said, cringing. He was used to kissing that mouth. He didn't want to think about stuff coming out of it this much.

"If you go around being a hero and flying girls around, sooner or later it's gonna happen," Alana warned him. "And now I think I ruined my own appetite."

"If you ruined it completely then at least you'll have an empty stomach when we fly," Johnny pointed out.

"True," Alana granted. "Wait, are we doing this tonight? I mean, I'm up for it if you are, but don't I need a protective suit or something so I don't burn up?"

"I won't light my arms. I'm still able to fly, we get to hold hands, and nobody has to wear protective suits," Johnny said. Well, he was technically wearing one but whatever.

"Win-win for everybody," Alana decided, reaching over the table to give one of Johnny's hands a squeeze since he'd mentioned holding hands. He had nice hands. "I'm in."

"Just so you know, I can sing Disney songs during the flight, but they will cost you extra," Johnny said.
