The Arms Hotel, Friday

Mary was in a good mood as she directed Gunther and his sous chef to hang a new banner in the lobby. The banner she thought she ordered said, "Welcome Fandom High Parents!" The banner that went up in the lobby said, "Congratulations Polly and Jun Ho!"

"Oh no," said Mary, her smile fading. "The one I wanted for Parents Weekend probably got sent to Las Vegas by mistake. Well, maybe that's the only thing that will go wrong this weekend." Like that would happen. The only response Mary got was laughter from Gunther, the sous chef, and the gremlins hiding in the janitorial closet.

Who is desperately hoping that the ice sculpture she pre-ordered for Polly's wedding doesn't show up in the lobby tomorrow.

"Umm, excuse me?" Kathy looked really apologetic to be bothering Mary right now. She was clearly busy, with so many new arrivals, but if Kathy didn't handle it, someone else might. Or, rather, it was her mess, she needed to be responsible for it. "Umm, do you have a minute?"

"Sure! I have a few minutes, actually," said Mary. It was busy, but Mary thrived on chaos. At least, that's what she kept telling herself. "What can I help you with?"

"I'm sorry, but I was wondering if it might be possible to swap rooms?" Kathy said, cheeks bright red. "Umm, the reservation for Li? L-I? I got the wrong room, sorry."

"I can move you to another room if you prefer," said Mary, tapping her keyboard to pull up the reservation. "There's still a few available. Was was wrong with your room?"

"Oh, nothing's wrong! Not exactly!" Kathy would feel terrible if Mary thought the hotel was at fault or something. "I was just hoping we could get a room with two beds, instead of one king? There was a--a miscommunication. That's all. But the room is perfectly lovely and we've barely been in there long, so hopefully the switch won't be too much trouble?"

"It shouldn't be too much trouble at all," said Mary. "Actually, sometimes I forget that we even have the king beds in certain rooms. It's not listed that way on our brochures, but I was having some renovations done on some suites and had moved some things around. But we aren't fully booked this weekend, so it shouldn't be a problem to find a room that works for you."

Kathy's sigh of relief was practically enough to send the banner fluttering. She'd been worried that they wouldn't have any rooms to change into and that she'd have to go back to her parents and explain.

Of course, if that had happened, she probably would have just paid the difference for them to be bumped up to a junior suite and told her folks that the increase was due to the hotel feeling bad.

"I had to do a bit of digging to even find it," Kathy said. "I thought my parents would appreciate the weekend without me and my sister, but they were looking for more wholesome family togetherness times, I guess. Still, I'm so sorry for the trouble."

"Oh, it's not too much trouble," said Mary. She's dealt with many a Las Vegas high-roller that had much more extensive demands. "I'm happy to do whatever I can to make the weekend better for everyone's families as long as mine doesn't show up!"

Kathy checked over her shoulder to make sure that neither of her parents had decided to follow her downstairs before turning back to Mary and nodding. Fervently. "I completely know what you mean," she said quietly. "I mean, I love my family and I'm thrilled to see them!"

Protest a little more, Kathy.

"But when they couldn't make it last year, things were a lot less...stressful."

"At least they can only stay for the weekend, right?" asked Mary with a smile. "And in the meantime, if you need a break from family togetherness, there's a lounge on the fifth floor," she added, handing over a key to the concierge lounge.

Kathy accepted the key with wide, grateful eyes. "I--are you sure? Do you mean it?" she asked, looking down at her cupped hands in disbelief. "Thank you so much! This is really, really kind of you! I mean, I'm sure I won't need it--"

Ahahaha. Yeah right. Keep telling yourself that, Kathy.

"But it's so nice to know it's there if I do. Thank you!"

"Go on and take it. You never know when family is going to get on your nerves and you need time to cool off," said Mary, smiling.

The key in her hand made her even happier than knowing they were going to be getting a new room that would meet her father's expectations, it really did.

"You're wonderful," Kathy enthused. "This is wonderful, just wonderful." She was babbling now. "Thank you so much, this is great, it's like you know or something..."

She was halfway back to the elevators when she realized that going back upstairs with only the lounge key was going to make her need to use it almost immediately. Shamefaced, she came back. "Umm, before I go...the new room?"

"Room 722. Here are your new room keys and I can have the bell boy head upstairs with you to help you move your bags," Mary offered.

Kathy took the new keys, keeping them separate from the key to the lounge she'd been given. "722. That's fine. That's better than fine, that's awesome," she said, nodding her head in thanks again. "A bellboy would be great, my mom would love one. Thank you!"

Again, she started walking away and again, she stopped short and returned. "Here," she said, pulling out a ten and passing it to Mary. "For the bellboy. My dad can sometimes be really forgetful about stuff like tips. Could you pass it along to whomever you send up?"

'Forgetful' didn't really explain why she was giving Mary the tip down here, instead of just passing it along to the busboy herself, but maybe no one would point that out.

"That's really generous of you! I'm sure the bellboy will really appreciate it," said Mary, beaming. "And if there's anything else I can do to make your stay more enjoyable, just let me know."

"You already have," Kathy assured her. "You saved my sanity twice over now. Thanks so much!"

Kathy was going to write such a letter of appreciation later. Was the Arms listed in the Better Business Bureau? Because they would get one, too.

The rest of the staff would be happy to assist you with your luggage or suggest a tasty treat. Just stay away from the janitorial closet full of gremlins.

The RNG is sad that it was not this time around.
