Cafe Fina [Monday Afternoon]

Even though he'd said goodbye to Alice, at least she knew where he was and he knew where she was so hopefully they wouldn't lose touch for so long again. So, that made everything about the weekend pretty well worth it. He was tired, sure, and feeling incredibly lazy today but he was there, slouched in his chair and reading a copy of the newspaper just because he could.

Hatter was in, obscured by a copy of the newspaper and trying not to fall asleep.

Go at it alone!

Despite appearance, he's there and willing to help!

As though Irene wasn't coming by to visit today.

She marched in, pulled a chair over to his, and took a seat with a smug little smile.

...and then didn't say anything. She was just going to sit here smiling at him, for the moment.

"I can feel your smugness and it's suffocating me," Hatter told her, pulling the newspaper down and giving her a look. "Stop smiling at me."

"You didn't tell me," she said, tilting her head as she smiled at him.

(Which, she was really one to talk there, but they'd get to that.)

"And what didn't I tell you?" Hatter asked, raising an eyebrow. "You've read all about me in books, you shouldn't need me to tell you anything, dear."

"You and Alice are different from how you are in the stories," she said, shaking her head a little and leaning her chin in her hand. "You didn't tell me it was like that."

"Tell you it was like what?" Hatter asked, intending to make her say it because he could and it gave him time to think of witty comebacks.

"That you're in love with her," Irene said, and she wasn't teasing this time. "Seriously. I'd've stopped trying to throw you at Apple salesgirls if I'd known."

"I'm not in love with anyone," Hatter said, making a face and shaking his head. He could be quite the good liar if he put his mind to it. "I saved her life, she owes me."

And would probably knee him if she'd heard him say that.

She made a face back at him. Ugh, he sounded like Sherlock. "Lie to yourself all you want, but you two are very cute together," she said, shrugging. "I'll lay off on the girl stuff from now on, yeah? Because you're clearly spoken for."

"Cute? You're making me sound like a puppy," Hatter said and made yet another face at her because he was totally mature. "Where are these wild assumptions coming from, anyway? Rose colored glasses, darling?"

"From watching you two together," Irene said. "Please. I'm not an idiot. Are you wearing your armor today, darling?"

Because someone had asked him not to, so she was curious.

"Yes." No. "I don't leave my apartment without it on. It's a chance I'm not willing to take."

Except for today.

Irene eyed him critically for a moment, then chirped a happy little, "Don't believe you. It's okay to admit it. She's very pretty. I see why you like her."

"All this trust we've built and you don't believe me?" Hatter asked, feigning offense. "Ouch."

And just for that, Irene was going to lift a brow and reach out and try to touch his shoulder. It'd be easy enough to feel, after all.

"Isn't it polite to ask before touching?" he joked, trying to bat her hand away with his newspaper. "Where are your manners, dear?"

"Probably wherever your vest is," Irene said, smirking at him since that confirmed it. "You've never minded my touching you before."

"All right, fine," Hatter told her, tossing the newspaper at her because he could. "I've a little soft spot for her. But, it's just a small one. She went through a lot."

"It's all right," she said, actually laughing as she batted the newspaper away. "It's all right to have a soft spot or two -- believe me, I know how that goes. I won't tell anyone."

Of course, anyone who'd seen them together would probably draw the same conclusions Irene had, but she would let him keep thinking it was a big secret, sure.

"Are you going to leave and go be with her?" she asked, more seriously.

"Not immediately, no," Hatter said, shaking his head. "I'm not used to such...normalcy in a world and she understands that. So, she's going to settle back in and recover from everything and I'll stay here and keep in contact."

For now, at least. "I'm sure I'll visit when I can tolerate putting on normal clothes and brushing my hair."

"Those are both optional when it comes to living in our more normal world," Irene told him seriously. "Really it's just your hat that'll draw attention."

She wanted to ask him about the other thing he hadn't told her -- but it was such a strange concept and so...invasive that she wasn't sure how to bring it up.

So she was just going to keep teasing him.

"I used to run around with a guy who wore a deerstalker cap once, and everyone loved it," she added. "Maybe you'll start a fashion trend if you visit her."

"Perhaps in time I'll go there or have her come here or return to Wonderland," Hatter told her, shrugging. "For now, we'll do this and see how it works. Completely uprooting so quick after a reunion would just make for more problems."

He thought so, at least. "Was the deerstalker cap chap the one who showed up this weekend?"
