Fandom Post Office, October 21 (Tuesday)
Not that the problems with apparently mistaken bulk deliveries had subsided -- sitting in the back right now and addressed to the onsen were a couple dozen crates of what appeared to be dishwashing liquid whose bottles proclaimed various sketchy scents such as barbecued pulled pork and tortilla soup -- but Éponine had more immediate problems to worry about today.
Namely the miniature avalanches of candy corn that kept spilling out of every post office box that got opened.
After about four instances of having to clean up the floor when all she'd been trying to do was make sure someone's mail would get to them, she started holding one of the mail sorting bins beneath each mailbox as she opened it, which was decidedly not the bin's intended purpose but see if she cared.
By about noon, there were three full bins of candy corn sitting outside the post office with a shakily hand-scrawled sign written on the inside of a torn-up priority mail envelope.

TAKE SOME.
GET IT OFF OUR HANDS,
it read.
Underneath, as an afterthought:
Please.

Talk to Éponine [10/21]
Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
He'd put back ... most of it. He may have kept a t-shirt for Emma.
Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
"Ah! There it is, yes," said Éponine, looking amused at the concept of happy cow t-shirts. (Disturbing food products, not so amusing, but probably about on the same level as what used to pass for food at her parents' inn, so eh.) "We'll have it over there today, there's a silly-looking delivery for the onsen and Mooby Land's on the way anyhow. But I'll trade you for it, how's that? Some candy for your trouble, since you dragged that all over here? We've plenty."
Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
He took a handful anyhow. Candy corn wasn't bad.
Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
By way of an answer, Éponine went over to one of the mailboxes and opened the door, this time just letting the candy corn fall to the floor with a rattle for dramatic effect.
"Someone's fond of the stuff, that's for sure."

He was cheerful, yes.
"I suppose it's like ... low-rent marzipan, molded into shapes."
Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
If Jack was cheerful, she was optimistic. Certainly she said it with a careless wave of her hand.
"It's candy. It makes kids happy, this time of year, seems like. Suppose that's all that matters, isn't it?"

Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
(No. No they did not.)
Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
Éponine laughed. "Giving? Me? Only when I can afford to be, M'sieur Priest. You understand, I'm sure."

Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
In some ways she was still definitely her father's daughter.
Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
"Island up to its usual holiday tricks, huh?" he asked, holding up some candy corn before popping it into his mouth.
Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
That last bit was half-yelled, while shaking one finger warningly at the sky in some vague attempt to discourage the island, but as soon as she'd finished Éponine dropped the stern(ish) expression and addressed Mike in a friendlier tone.
"Now, what can I do for you today? I thought I saw something or other with your name on it."
Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
He knew the sender and their feelings on him.
Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
"There you are," she said, placing it on the counter and looking satisfied. "It looks like it had quite the trip, poor old thing, though at least I don't think it got chewed on by some creature along the way."
Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
Florida was a terrifying place, okay. Except no.
"Thanks, it's in good enough condition for me."
Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
Except now she was going to spend the rest of the day constantly checking on the packages to see if anything did burst out of them and go straight for the candy corn.
"Why d'you think someone would be mailing one to you?"
Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
He considered for a beat.
"I guess if she actually hated me, she would've burned the stuff in the first place instead of telling me she had it."
Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
She smiled slightly, a distant expression in her eyes, as if she were remembering something. "No, she must think at least a bit better of you to go to that trouble."
Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
He maybe hadn't been.
Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
Probably not.
"It was nice of her to see that you had your things back, anyway, even if they aren't that important. But why d'you think she might be mad at you? That hasn't got anything to do with you being here, does it?"
Sorry, Mike. Éponine and the concept of boundaries still had a few differences.
Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
He scratched the back of his head again, and chuckled. "No. We, uh, we kind of dated for a while, a few years before I came here. I wasn't the greatest at it, she's right to be mad."
Re: Talk to Éponine [10/21]
Looking at you, Montparnasse.
