Four was hiding his nerves behind a slight smirk as he glanced over at Sia as he held the door open for her. "Have you ever played pool before? I learned about it in Dauntless during training. It's good for mental focus and winning money from stupider people."

By which he meant Eric. Eric was a dick and had more than deserved it, with all of his Erudite arrogance.

"Oh, and thanks for coming. Last night wasn't really my thing."

Parties, dressing up, being social in general: not really Four's thing.

"It isn't mine, either. I'm still not sure what the point of dressing up even is," Sia admitted, stepping inside. It wasn't like she couldn't buy candy if she wanted it. "And I think I've seen pool on TV, which means we will not be playing for money."

"Then you can be impressed by my amazing skills in a game I've played maybe 10 times," Four said, smiling faintly. "It's basically another version of 'hit ball with stick' except this time the balls have colors and numbers on them."

"That doesn't sound too difficult," Sia decided. "I can do that. I'm very good at hitting things."

"That's why I thought you'd like this," Four said. "Sparring didn't seem like a really good Saturday night activity."

At least as a first date...thing.

"No, that's really more of an everyday thing. And in two years here, I've never even been in here, so that was a good call." First dates were good for discovering new things!

And Four wasn't really a movie guy.

"They serve food here, too, which isn't exactly something the gym provides," Four said.

He walked over to the pool table and took his black (of course) leather jacket off and laid it over a nearby chair, revealing a black knit sweater and black jeans. Which...not that unusual a choice for Four. "Want something? We can order and play while they get it ready."

"I have no idea what they have," Sia said, taking off her own jacket. Personally she'd have preferred to wear a dress on something like this, but the weather meant pants and long sleeves for her. "I'm guessing it's probably along the lines of fries and bar food?"

She'd been in plenty of bars, but had never really paid attention to the menu.

Four nodded. "Burgers, probably." He ran his hand through his hair. "I hadn't had one until I moved to Dauntless."

"It sounds like Dauntless opened you up to all sorts of new things," Sia noted. Like electricity.

Four's lips quirked up a little wryly. "It was an entirely different place than Abnegation. Polar opposites, really."

"And it seems to have worked out better for you. You wouldn't want to go your whole life without a hamburger, after all," she said lightly.

"Or chocolate cake," Four said, grinning quickly. "Each Faction has its own treat, other than Abnegation, of course, because treats are frivolous. Dauntless' is chocolate cake."

"Ah, that explains that," Sia said, remembering him going for that at events. "Abnegation doesn't even get dessert? That's just cruel."

Four went for a couple of pool cues as an excuse to drop eye contact for a moment. "Now you know the dark secret of why I left: baked goods."

"If it helps at all, I support this reasoning entirely," Sia told him. And she figured one day she was going to have to ask why he really did leave, but a first date was not the time.

Four began racking the balls. "My father wasn't as understanding."

"I imagine not," she said, watching him. "But then, I'm not sure many parents would be."

"We're raised with 'faction before blood' as an ideal our whole lives," Four said. "You'd think that someone as devoted to Abnegation as he is would be more selfless."

That came out more bitterly than he'd intended. Marcus brought up bad memories.

"I think everyone has something that would make them go back on their beliefs when it really comes down to it," Sia said. Okay, maybe she didn't, at least not as far as she knew, but everyone else.

"Oh?" Four said, arching up an eyebrow and handing her the pool cue. He walked around the table and placed the cue ball on the marked spot. "What's yours?"

"I don't know yet," she admitted, taking the cue. "It would have to be something huge, though."

"Take the stick, use it to hit the white ball into the triangle of colored ones," Four said. "The goal is to get at least one into the holes. That'll decide if you're aiming at odds or evens for the rest of the game."

Sia nodded. "Seems simple enough. Whoever gets the most of their own balls in wins?"

"Except for the black one," Four said. "That one has to go last. You also have to say which hole it's going to go into. If you miss or get it wrong, you automatically lose."

"Got it," she said. "Would you like to go first?"
