The busboy and the dishwasher were making snow angels in a pile of shaved ice by the freezer door when Eliot arrived today. Having just spent the morning in a "wintry mix" in Baltimore, Eliot was not amused.

"Freezer's on the fritz," the cook said. "The polar bears are moving the frozen moose jerky to the roof."

Eliot raised his hand in preparation for telling him off -- then just gave up in a huff and stormed off.

Stupid Fandom. Who the hell kept jerky in a freezer?!

He hadn't even blinked at the mention of polar bears. He was starting to adapt.

"No eel on the menu today, right?" Vic asked as she came through the door. "Because I'm out of here if it's even near the kitchen."

"No eel," Eliot promised. The stuff he got from Hannibal was for his private stock, thank you very much. The cook here would just ruin it, anyway. "Nothin' but good old fashioned american animal parts on the menu today." He offered Vic a smile. "It's been awhile. How much crap've you been eating?"

"Hey. I had a carrot stick yesterday. Back off," Vic said with a smirk as she settled down at the counter. "Tomorrow I might even have a piece of fruit. I'm totally eating healthier."

"A whole carrot stick, huh?" Eliot shook his head. "S'pose everyone's gotta start somewhere. How ya been?"

"Good. Keeping busy and avoiding fucking eels," Vic said taking off her gloves and coat. "How about you? I heard Parker's been hanging out here on the island."

"Yeah, she decided I liked the island better'n her and signed us up to teach a class together without tellin' me first." Eliot shrugged. "Which for Parker actually ain't all that crazy. The class is kinda fun, too."

Turned out Eliot rather liked teaching. Especially when the students were people who did things like work out how to fight people off with gymnastic ribbons.

"Still sounds crazy to me," Vic said raising her eyebrows. "Somebody signs me up to teach a bunch of kids without telling me first and they're liable to get punched in the face. But, hey, if you like it. Go for it. What are you teaching?"

"Hell, I'm just glad she let me know more than five minutes before class started. Wouldn't recommend tryin' to punch her at all, though. She gets a little stabby when provoked." Eliot actually sounded rather proud of that. Sure, he'd probably be happier if she just learned to punch back, but at least she was protecting herself! "We're teaching Creative Problem Solving. So far it's mostly how to get into and outta places."

"You mean like breaking and entering," Vic said raising an eyebrow. "Or you know. Stabbing people when provoked."

The smirk on her face should tell you she's kidding, Eliot.

"Nah, no stabbing, yet. Though one girl did beat the crap outta a sim last week when it tried to goose her." Again, pride. "And hey, around here, breaking and entering is a viable skill."

"Okay, fine but if any of your students start breaking into business, I'm blaming you," Vic said waving her finger at Eliot. "And Parker too. And if she tries to stab me then it's assaulting a police officer. Though I doubt I need to tell you that."

And this was why Eliot had always avoided getting friendly with a police officer before. There was just this giant paradigm gap there. "If they get caught they ain't doin' it right," he said, with one of those 'just kidding' smirks Vic liked so much. "I promise to tell Parker to try to avoid stabbing you. Or tasing." He would try telling her to keep clear of Vic entirely, but at best that would probably just convince her to follow Vic around suspiciously.

Vic let out a snort of laughter. "Okay, well I'm all right with the tasing. Just no deadly force and I'll be fine with it," she joked. "And if your kids are getting away with shit then I'm going to have a talk with Ralph. He must be getting lazy if he's letting kids get the better of him."

Then again he's a stormtrooper and wouldn't be able to shoot straight anyway.

"Well hell, I never said it was deadly stabbing," Eliot said. "Far as I know, Parker hasn't killed anyone." Of course, there was a lot of Parker's history he didn't particularly want to know, either. "And have you seen these kids? Some of 'em can probably turn invisible or somethin'."

"Hmm. Yeah. Don't remind me," Vic replied. "Kids who can do that rank right up there with floating eels. I'd rather not deal with it. I was bad enough as a normal teenage girl. I would have been a lot worse to deal with as a girl with superpowers."

"Hey, at least these superpowered kids have floating eels as an outlet."

"Yes. And now the town smells like old eel," Vic said wrinkling her nose. "I'm not sure that's a trade off."

Eliot shrugged. "I've smelled worse. Did a stint once on a fishing boat in the Indian Ocean. Now that was a smell."

Plus, you know, there was all the time he'd spent in third world dungeons. That didn't make as good casual conversation, though.

"A fishing boat in the Indian Ocean?" Vic said raising her eyebrows. "Was this one of your team's little adventures or were you just really into fishing?"

"Nah, this was just after my army days. Needed to pick up a few extra bucks." And get the hell out of Myanmar before someone decided to go for the half a million dollar bounty on his head.

And now I wish I had some chili. Or a polar bear.
