JGOB: Wednesday Afternoon

After spending most of the week handwavily cooped up in the station, Vic needed a significant break from dealing with Ralph and the nutballs calling in to complain about... well everything.

So she was getting coffee. Some might say getting caffeinated wasn't going to help her feel less wound up but screw it. She needed a break.

Roland had tried to busk this week. He really did! Unfortunately, no matter what he tried to play, it kept coming out as "Why Don't We Do It in the Road". And really, the ambient sexiness of the island didn't need any extra help from bardic powers, right now, so he just sort of gave up and went for coffee instead.

Where the cop was hanging out. So now Roland was absolutely terrified and horny. So there was that, at least.

"Er," he said, offering Vic a slightly wide-eyed wave. "Hi."

Vic let out a small sigh and forced a small smile that was supposed to be comforting but... well looked forced.

"Hi,' she replied with a wave. "Don't worry. Off duty. Not arresting anyone for busking. Or whatever it is you call it."

"Oh good." Roland attempted to relax. It worked about as well as Vic's small smile did. "And, uh. Busking's right. Street music, all that. Except I can't seem to play anything but sex songs, this week." Because that was necessary information. He should probably just shut up and order his coffee, now.

"Yeah," Vic said with yet another sigh. "That seems to be a common problem this week."

You'd be amazed at what people called the police station to complain about.

"Don't you have some will or control over what you sing?"

"Normally I have completely will and control over it. But, uh. Sometimes the guitar has other ideas."

Sure, Roland, blame your guitar. When she was all tucked up in her case and couldn't defend herself, even.

"So. You're saying your guitar is horny," Vic deadpanned. "Maybe you need to leave it alone with a banjo in a closet for an afternoon."

"I don't have a banjo," Roland said. "I have a harp and a flute and now I'm wondering about their respective sexualities so thanks for that." That harp was probably pretty kinky, actually. It was made by pseudo-vampire dark elves, after all.

"Oh, so you play the flute?"

It was supposed to be an innocent question. Really. However whatever was going on with this island subconsciously made Vic put an inflection on the word flute that she really hadn't intended.

"Oh. That sounded.... Ohhhhh."

Cue groaning and facepalming.

Yeah, Roland had no idea how to respond to that. Cue awkward frozen smile as he worked it out.

"Yes," he said finally. "I play the flute and the guitar. Not the harp, though."

One of these days he'd totally get around to learning. Totally.

"Is the harp unruly?" Vic said trying to think of anything to say to avoid any potential awkwardness. "Or does it just not play well with the flute and the guitar?"

"Actually, yes." Roland shrugged. "It's a magic harp from the Shadow Realm that yells at me if I disagree with it too much. It seems to get along okay with the guitar, though."

Said guitar, as if to agree, let out a solid middle C from inside her case.

Vic blinked twice at Roland and then looked down at the guitar case.

"Did it just play a note by itself?"

"Yeah," Roland said. "She does that, sometimes."

"Your guitar... has a brain."

It was a statement. Dumbfounded but a statement.

Roland frowned. "Not . . . as such, no?" It wasn't like there was a skull there for a brain to be in, right? "I think it just got kind of magical."

Somewhere in between being played by a two-thirds bard and traveling through a magical realm.

"And it makes you play sexy songs," Vic continued. "Just how magical is this guitar?"

"I wasn't saying the guitar was making me sing songs about sex." Just, you know, the general atmosphere of the island. "She just, you know, plays notes by herself, sometimes."
