Needful Things, Saturday

Today was a lovely day on this quaint little island, wasn't it? Birds were singing, the sun was attempting to shine from behind a cloud that was being especially stubborn, and even the evergreen trees in the preserve seemed to be changing their colors, needles turning a sickly brown and branches beginning to sag.

Why, it was positively uplifting! Leland Gaunt was almost disappointed that he couldn't be out enjoying the lovely Saturday weather, but then, weren't the weekends so much better for business in these little small-island towns?

There would be plenty of pleasant weather for him to enjoy later, he was certain. Today, he was quite happy to tend his shop, and wait.

After radio, of course Tony had to swing by this shop. And scoff at the name/slogan they had going. Scoff all he could.

He poked his head into the store, looking around before slipping on in. Nothing so far seemed to be extremely distracting. So far.

So far. But it was Leland's job to match the buyer with the perfect distraction. In fact, it was his passion. His expression lit up brightly as he noticed Tony in the doorway.

"Welcome! Do come in, have yourself a look around. Is there anything I can help you find today?"

Anything at all, Mr. Stark. The sky was quite literally the limit, for the right price.

Creepy, Leland. Creepy. Though, really, what might one expect from Stephen King?

"Just looking," Tony replied. Maybe there was some kind of nut flavoured alcohol in here that got the squirrels distracted.

Leland smiled and spread his hands a little.

"Well, then by all means, take a look around," he said, because he clearly hadn't gotten the 'creepy' memo. Or maybe he had, and he just enjoyed it when people felt inclined to squirm. "We've got a large assortment of items, some simple, and some old and exceptionally rare. If anything catches your eye, let me know and I'll be happy to assist you with it."

"How old and rare we talking?" And was this going to end in him hanging out with Dwarves. Again.

"Exceptionally old, and unbelievably rare," Leland replied easily. "Or far newer and less so, I suppose. It really depends on what people are in the market for. I carry everything from baseball cards to jewelry, bric-a-brac and odds-and-ends that I've bartered for and collected in my travels. There's usually something here for everyone."

Usually. The more the merrier, after all. He so enjoyed doing business with the locals.

"So, this is a thrift shop." If only he watched American Pickers to make that reference. If only!

"Oh, come now," Leland protested, though his smile didn't wane and his demeanor remained friendly and open, "'Thrift Shop' sounds so mundane. We sell far more interesting items than scratched CDs," though they did sell music here, "and mismatched kitchen plates. I might make a habit to pick up a decent variety, but I would like to think that my tastes are at least somewhat discerning, Mr...?"

He raised his eyebrows a little, expectantly, but spoke again before Tony could answer.

"Ah, how rude of me. Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Leland Gaunt, a traveling salesperson of sorts. Your little island seemed like an interesting place to set up shop."

Conveniently. Ignore that the Needful Things had been a business here for a long, long while.

"Stark," Tony replied, offering out his hand to shake. Because he was a businessman and that's what one did. "Interesting can put it mildly."

Ahaha, no, sorry Tony. Leland wouldn't be shaking your hand today. The human types always got a little weird when they touched, and that was simply terrible for business.

He gave him an easy smile even while he completely neglected to take the offered hand, and instead tilted his head a little, clearly very suddenly distracted by Tony's other statement.

"Mildly? Oh? So you're telling me that perhaps I haven't chosen a quaint, quiet little town after all? Fandom really is quite eye-catching. The architecture, the cobblestones. The stairs."

So, so many stairs.

"The stairs," Tony agreed, frowning slightly at the dismissal. "Well, it would seem that there have been two other versions of me so far."

"Two? Well, isn't that an honor? You must be a very important man, to need to have three of you running around."

Oh, Gaunt knew all about alternate realities and the principles of a multiverse. He had been around a long, long time, after all. But he found that shameless flattery in the wake of - oops - neglecting to shake somebody's hand tended to do wonders to smooth things over a bit.

"At my last count, I only had the one."

That was neither strictly true nor was it necessarily a good thing. The optimal number of Leland Gaunts in the multiverse, after all, was probably zero.

Unless you asked Leland, of course. And then he'd probably insist on the number being one, because he hardly wanted to share all of the fun he was having with any others.

"...yeah," Tony replied, blinking at the response to 'multiverses'. "I wouldn't say I was that important."

Much. Around Pepper.

Pepper would never let him get away with it, for a start.

"Is that so? Well, then perhaps yours is a path that's simply fated to meet with this island, so thoroughly that you've done so across several different realities already," Leland suggested, and then he grinned. "Come now, Mr. Stark, no need to look so surprised. I'm given to believe that this island attracts all sorts, after all. People who are already familiar with the concept of alternate realities included."

"Then I guess you'll fit right in here." Why did that thought make Tony frown a little?

Because he was up there with Loki, Tony. Up there with Loki.

"That's certainly the hope," Leland chuckled. "And the locals have all been so very welcoming thus far."

Why, he'd already gotten some business here! For an island that proved itself to be very much a unique challenge, even for him, that was very heartening indeed.
