Cafe Fina [Monday Afternoon]

Hatter had very big plans when he breezed into work that morning. He had lesson plans to write and letters to read and a phone to look at it. He had new tea variations he wanted to attempt and staff he wanted to talk to about certain things.

All that went away when he sat down in his chair and promptly fell asleep. Well, then.

Go at it alone!

He's around though he's currently asleep!

Mike had totally fallen asleep on the job, earlier. Like, not in a dangerous situation – he'd actually been on his lunch break – but it was enough for him to call it a day just in case. And seek out caffeine, which was why and how he ended up here.

"Yo, do you have any –– oh."

You know what, he was going to go ahead and assume the random narcolepsy wasn't just him.

Hatter slumbered for a minute longer before he opened his eyes and looked around, confused.

"Was I just asleep?" he asked, frowning.

"Yeah," Mike confirmed, raising his eyebrows a little. "Think it's another island thing. Got me too, earlier."

"I don't have time for that," Hatter said, making a face and rubbing his eyes. "I have things to do that aren't sleeping in my restaurant."

"Dude, we all have more important shit to be doing," Mike pointed out. "The island doesn't really give a damn about that."

"That's rather rubbish," Hatter said but shook his head. "Can I help you with something? I'm pretty sure we have both food and drink if my staff haven't all fallen asleep back there."

"Uh, yeah, I came by for something with maybe a larger amount of caffeine in it?" he replied, after a second to get his brain back on track. "For the napping."

"That's a good plan," Hatter said, reaching for a cup nearby so he could start making some tea. "Is there anything you don't like? Allergic to or just wish was never invented?"

Mike shook his head. "Nah. I'm not too picky."

He just wanted to hopefully get home without falling asleep again. His needs were simple.

"Is there a particular taste your in the mood for?" he asked, pushing his hat back and taking a look at the various supplies he used to blend teas with.

"Dunno." He had not come prepared. "You have any, like... fruit? Something sweet, anyway."

"You're an easy customer," Hatter said and made it sound like a compliment. "Not picky like some people. Talking about pinches and dashes and sprigs and other bloody stupid things."

Mike huffed out a quiet chuckle. "Yeah, I don't really go for that stuff. I'm a pretty simple guy. And I don't drink a lot of tea."

"You should. It's good for you," Hatter said wisely. "Much better than coffee. Who wants to taste something that bitter for so long?"

"I do." A lot, even. "But I can probably admit it's kinda by force of habit."

"That stuff will put you in an early grave." Honestly, Hatter didn't know that but he liked to think that. Because he was a businessman.

With a bit of a flourish, he finished Mike's tea. There were strawberries blended with peaches and a bigger dosage of tea leaves for more caffeine.

"There you go," he said, pushing the cup towards Mike.

"Thank you," Mike nodded, as he took the cup. "Smells nice. You some kind of tea master or something?"

"You could say that," Hatter told him, taking a seat again. "I've been making tea and running tea shops for most of my life. I'm very good at what I do."

"Huh." Yeah, after all this time, he could stil find himself a little surprised by pretty mundane things. "Cool. Never really considered that that was a thing."

"It seems to have blended into a few different things in this place," Hatter said, waving a hand. "Rather boring, if you ask me. It means they can't concentrate on one corner of the market. No one has a specialty anymore!"

"I'd argue with that, but I work at the bar, and we don't really have a specialty," Mike noted, swirlin the tea around in the cup some. "I don't think alcohol is specialized enough. Although we do have a zombie band to set us apart."

"Yes, the zombie band," he said, making a face. "The smell is quite the attractive option to stick in a brochure."

"Hey, they don't even smell that bad!"

A beat.

"I mean, unless you stand too close to them."

Hatter shuddered and shook his head. "Still, I think I'd rather stay here, in the safe haven that is my shop. Though, live music is a rather intriguing idea."

Mike shruuged a shoulder. "Sometimes they even take requess. Although I don't know where the limits of that are, in case you're from one of the, uh, weirder worlds."

"Weirder worlds?" he asked, raising an eyebrow. "What qualifies as a weirder world in this place?"

"Well, where I'm from, we don't have like zombies or werewolves or candy that rains from the sky," Mike said, shrugging again. "So I consider that one of the... the, uh, not so weird worlds."

"In my world, we used to be ruled by a queen," he shared. "Is that weird?"

"... Isn't that just England?"

So, no, it wasn't weird when you put it like that.

"Just checking," he said, rubbing his chin. "In my world, we had a queen. She wasn't the world's best monarch. Always wanting people to lose their heads."

"Oh. That ––"

He frowned and tilted his head a little.

"That actually sounds vaguely familiar."

"Does it?" Hatter asked, amused. "How so?"

"Well, like... 'Off with her head', that kind of thing."

He shrugged.

"Do they do that here?" he asked, amused. "It's quite the effective way of maintaining order."

Mike scratched the back of his head. "I don't think anyone does that here." God, he hoped not. "Unless the president has some explaining to do."

Hatter snickered. "I know nothing of this government here. I'd prefer to keep it that way. I got way too involved with that back home. Messy, messy business. Nothing works and everyone hates each other."

"Well, that kinda sounds like government over here, too."

But with fewer potential beheadings.

"Bah," Hatter said, waving a hand and shaking his head. "But, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised. No place is perfect, is it?"

"No, I don't think any place actually comes even close to perfect," Mike remarked.

And... yawned. Kind of a lot.

Hatter eyed him before standing up. "Are you going to fall asleep? Please don't do it on the floor."

So bad for business.

"Well you don't have any beds 'round here."

Was sleeping sitting down allowed? Because seriously, he felt pretty sleepy again all of a sudden.

That tea did not do a goddamn thing.

"Sit in my chair," Hatter told him, pointing at it. "It's more comfortable than the floor and it's the best I have since the only bed nearby is the one in my apartment."

Mike's movements were a little sluggish, and he yawned as he moved, but at least he made it to the chair.

"Thanks, man."

"You're welcome," Hatter said, shaking his head. "I'm not tucking you in though. Sweet dreams."

He was so getting good karma points for this.

Mike didn't argue.

Instead, he fell asleep. It was that kind of day.
