The Perk- Saturday evening

Gwen had portaled back today from home. While the trip had been amazing, uh. It was madness hanging out with three teenage boys in one house, and it was good to get back and have a little more space, even if she was going to be checking to make sure Johnny II (as she was calling him to piss him off) or Bobby hadn't claimed her room while she was gone.

She'd gone straight to the Perk for coffee and a pastry for dinner, but when she got there, the baristas had that look of Fandom fatigue, when you're here and doing your job, but you're annoyed that anyone's daring to ask anything of you. So when her order was up, Gwen took her stuff to a corner table, out of their line of sight, and decided to be nice and not ask what she missed.

With the bars not exactly hopping tonight, Jessica made her way to the other place she knew to get a drink. Okay, not the same kind of drink, but a drink nonetheless. And after the sleep she'd gotten the past few hours, a little bit of coffee to help her get through a few hours before a reasonable bed time wasn't a bad idea.

She spotted Gwen after placing her order and waved. "You look surprisingly chipper." It belatedly occurred to Jessica that this Gwen had met her once when her hair was very different. It was entirely possible that she was talking to someone who thought she was a complete stranger, as opposed to almost a complete stranger. She needed caffeine.

"Oh, hey," Gwen said, clearly recognizing her because this town was small and it was easier to remember people that way, even if she wasn't positive on her name. "I think you're the first person to ever say I'm chipper, but I think it's easier to be chipper-ish since I wasn't here the last week."

"That would explain it," Jessica said. "It was a rough one. Do me a favor and never buy stuff from a super evil guy, okay? It'll make my life easier."

"Iiiiii think that goes without saying?" Gwen said. "But you can count on me. Everything at least over now? 'Cause if not I'm catching a portal home..."

"Yep. Evil guy apparently scampered off after just straight up teleporting out of the jail, the island's getting better, and we'll be onto the next thing by tomorrow," Jessica said.

"Can we put off the evil things? I don't like the evil things," Gwen frowned.

"I really hope so," Jessica said as the barista handed over her coffee. "Hopefully it's something funny. Boys turning into girls or something."

"God, I hope so. I haven't seen that happen yet, and I don't really want to go around with my very own package," Gwen said.

"It's kind of startling," Jessica said. And that was a reminder that if the reverse happened when she was still in town, Jessica would have to avoid some people. Right. Maybe she could grow a super quick beard if it happened. "But it's over fast enough if you hide well."

"So get some boys' jeans and put a bunch of things in my Netflix queue just in case?" Gwen said.

"That's pretty much how I went about it," Jessica said. "Although now it's easier for me. I can just call in sick to work and stay in my hotel room."

"Are you like here now?" Gwen asked. Hey, it'd been a while. "What've they got you doing?"

"I'm working at the trooper station. So don't break any laws, okay?" Jessica requested.

There was a pause.

"I mean, I'll try...?"

"Eh, you'd probably manage to break out anyway," Jessica said. She wasn't bitter, Leland Gaunt. NOPE. "But don't let me be the one to catch you. It would be like a Student Council betrayal."

"I would never betray a fellow StuCo member," Gwen said, feigning seriousness. She sounded like she was in a sorority saying that, ew.

"Thank you for saying that," Jessica said. "It's appreciated."

"Is this where we do a secret handshake? I feel like there should be a handshake." That was serious.

Jessica put her coffee down and held her hand out. "Yep."

Gwen also put her hand out. If she looked a little apprehensive, well, she had no idea what she was doing.

She was going to improvise, that's what. It's what Jessica was doing as she started the shake.

And Gwen was going to go along with it awkwardly! "And now I have to teach it to everybody," she said.

"It's good to know I can still influence StuCo even being away for a year," Jessica laughed.

"I wonder who gets to teach it to the principal..." Gwen mused.

"She likes me a lot after this weekend," Jessica said. "I've got it. Next time I see her."
