Fast Eddie's, Monday evening

Between the island being back to normal and Johnny having gotten over his flu, it felt like an excellent night for a date. Alana wasn't totally certain why they picked a date that involved the world's most hideous shoes, but she figured she'd look at it as a learning experience.

"So," she said, once her feet were appropriately shod and ugly. "Just for the record, using powers is cheating."

Hideous shoes? Johnny was working his. They seemed like a natural fit on him. "I'm pretty sure powers would completely wreck this place," Johnny noted. "Pretty much everything's made of wood. That would get ugly fast."

Alana shrugged, grinning an acknowledgment. "Probably. I was just, y'know, setting ground rules."

"I do have to admit, it would be pretty cool to s a flaming ball rolling down the lane," Johnny said. "Maybe I can talk to the manager and get that set up sometime."

"Or flaming gutters," Alana offered. "Normal ball, passing through a wall of flame. Maybe that's your follow-up to the flaming ball."

It'd burn the place down, but it would look cool doing it!

"Man, me, whoever runs this place, and the fire department have to sit down and figure out how to make this work," Johnny said. "You'll be known far and wide as the inventor of fire bowling."

"See, I hoped I'd do something here people would remember," Alana informed him. She stood in front of the ball rack, trying to select one that was the exact perfect weight. "I figured it'd have to do with StuCo and glitter, but I'm not gonna complain if it's flaming bowling."

"We could try glitter bowling, too, but I'd probably avoid actually playing that one," Johnny said, picking the best looking ball at what he was assuming was a good weight. "Have you actually bowled before?"

"Yeah, I did it in one of my gym classes," Alana confirmed. "Throw the ball at the pins, try to knock 'em all down."

She nudged him with her shoulder. "What about you? Do you go bowling a lot?"

"Not really," Johnny said with a shrug. "Back in the day I was mostly just hanging out with the Baxter Building brainiacs. Bowling was too athletic for most of them. And then once I became a superhero, I don't know, I was already a teenager and was more into trying to date girls and drink underage. In the long run, I think it was the better choice. Especially since you'll look extra great compared to my score."

[And I forgot about this until just now because of work. TEAMWORK!]

"I have depth," Alana deadpanned. "I fit the bowling in around the underage drinking and the chasing boys."

She finally got a ball to her liking, a swirly purple one, and brought it to her chest. "Should we bet something? Or are we playing just to play?"

"Well, you're probably going to win, so set your stakes," Johnny said. "And then I'll decide. Nice ball, by the way. It suits you."

"Loser pays for prom tickets?" Alana suggested, then looked down at the ball and laughed. "Thanks. That's me, purple and swirly."

"Huh. I kind of forgot it was almost prom time. But that's about right. I haven't won a shiny crown in a while," Johnny said. "You're on."

"It's still a couple weeks off, but I like to plan ahead," Alana informed him. "Besides, crowns look good on you."

She moved toward the alley and lined up her first ball, then threw fast and hard. Five pins went down.

"Hmm, so far not too terrible."

"They do," Johnny said. "Almost as good as they look on you." See, that's what he got from practicing with girls instead of bowling. In a minute, the other side of that coin would be obvious and he'd feel a little less smug.

Alana grinned at him under her lashes. "I look good in hats all around," she said. "But you can wear the hell out of a crown."

She bowled the second of the frame, swearing as she watched the ball glance off the pin at far left and spun into the gutter, then tried to play it off like she didn't care.

"Your move, hot stuff."

"Just remember, even if you get tired of watching sporting failure, you're still going to have a good view of my tush for ten whole frames," Johnny said. He picked up his ball, started down the lane, and bowled the ball with all his might. About halfway down the lane it started curving left and eventually knocked down the three pins in the corner.

"If I just wanted to stare at your tush, I could probably find a better excuse than bowling," Alana joked. She would have criticized Johnny's skillz, but five wasn't a whole lot better than three.

Johnny started off a little farther to his right after retrieving his ball. "Yeah, but you should never ignore a good opportunity to do it," Johnny said before starting his march toward the line. It was pretty much the same as the first roll, hooking hard left and knocking down another couple pins.

"So does that mean you're using my turns to stare at my rear?" Alana teased, and gave a wry glance to the scoreboard. "We both knocked something down. Go, us."

"I promise to be subtle about it," Johnny said. "Subtle but appreciative."

Alana cocked her head to the side curiously. "What part of being subtle is telling the person you're going to do it?"

"The honest part," Johnny said confidently.

"You got me on that one," Alana said, and went back to pick up her ball. "So did you see the sign-up for that camping trip?" she asked idly. "It's not really my thing, but I'd go if you wanted to commune with nature."

Because Johnny was so the communing-with-nature type.

"I'm not really the camping type. I need technology. Couches. A bed," Johnny said. "Need a fire and I'm your man. But I'll see if I can leave after I start it."

"Beds are good," Alana agreed. "Also, wifi, ice water, and avoiding bugs."

She lined up and bowled the frame, doing a bit better than she had on the first but still well short of a strike.
