There was a llama in the kitchen today.

"No," said Eliot, and walked back out before the cook could do more than open his mouth to explain.

Luke's was open. Mind the llama.

Ask why the menu is all Indian-y instead of Peruvian-y.

He definitely wasn't googling symptoms of pneumonia and wondering how anyone found anything out on the internet without deciding they were dying.

Jalian hadn't ever come in here before, but that male at the camp this weekend had suggested it might be good, so here she was.

She eyed the llama for a moment, then just mentally shrugged and let it go.

Eliot looked up, a flash of relief on his face at the interruption to his ~~reckless~~ fruitless googling. "Hey kid," he greeted. "What can I get ya?"

"I'm not a child," Jalian answered matter-of-factly. "I don't know, but your friend said I should try coming in."

"Right," Eliot said very seriously. "Regional dialect thing." Yeah, honey, he was still going to think of you as a kid. He gestured to the specials board. "We've got kind of an Indian theme going today, but the freezer's enormous, and we've got a little bit of everything. What sort of food you into?"

Jalian wasn't sure how thinking she was a "kid" was a dialect thing, but Carmilla had called her "cupcake", so she would mark it down as another oddity.

"I don't eat meat," she said. "And sugar makes me ill."

"That just processed sugar, or does it include honey as well?" Eliot asked. "'Cause we could do tempeh with the honey-ginger sauce just as easily as chicken. It's pretty damn good."

Jalian brightened a bit. "The sugar only; honey is fine. What is tempeh?"

"It's kind of a steak made out of soybean," Eliot explained. "Like tofu, if you've tried that. Lots of protein, not a lick of animal in it."

Jalian tried to figure it out, but ended up shaking her head. "How do you make a steak from a bean?"

"Mostly by mashing it up into a paste," Eliot said. "Then you let 'em ferment for awhile until it thickens, slice it up, and cook. We can do somethin' else, if that doesn't sound good to ya. Some folks are put off by the idea."

Mostly folks who liked to eat meat and thought "let it ferment" meant "let it get moldy and gross".

Fortunately, that wasn't Jalian's first thought.

"It's like...solid beer?"

No, not really. "Sure," Eliot said. "'Cept it ain't alcoholic and it tastes like soybeans and whatever you put on it, and not hops."

That...still sounded odd. Jalian shook her head. "If it has no meat or sugar, I will try it."

"No meat and no sugar," Eliot promised. "And if you don't like it, we'll make ya somethin' else." He signaled the cook and passed along the order. "How'd the rest of the camping trip treat you? Get some hiking in?"

"I walked a lot," Jalian said. "And the beach was nice. I like cities, but it was good to be a little quieter for a while."

"Know exactly what you mean," Eliot said. "It's just too bad I ain't managed to convince my friends of it, yet."

And considering that Hardison was upstairs right now being a miserable wretch, he really wasn't likely to convince them at all, ever.

"Raven says camping is to prove ourselves against nature. Maybe your friends are scared of it?" That one man had definitely seemed not to like it much, anyway.

Eliot laughed. "Parker ain't afraid of anything," he said. "Hardison . . . that's a possibility. Admittedly, our times out in the woods keep not goin' well for him."

"Hardison is the dark-skinned one?" Jalian asked to make sure. "Did he fall or get bitten?" Those seemed the most likely problems in the wild if you weren't used to it.

"That's him," Eliot confirmed. "He decided it was a good idea for us all to go swimming." In Indiana. In early spring. "I shouldn't've let him go for it, but it was just so damn nice to see him excited about doing something outdoors. . . ." He shook his head. "Anyway, now he's sick. And will probably never go into the woods with me again."

Jalian frowned, puzzled. "He had a reaction to something in the water?"

"He had a reaction to how cold the water was," Eliot said. "Damn city kid had no idea, and he lives off orange soda, so he basically has no immune system, either."

Jalian nodded. That made more sense. "City people here seem to be weak at some things. Their senses especially."

They just couldn't see practically to gamma waves, the strange people.

Yeah, Eliot couldn't do that, either. That was maybe a future-people thing.

"They make up for it in other ways. Mostly by complaining."

Jalian snorted. "They do! A lot! And they make all sorts of strange rules and things."

Things like etiquette, social niceties, and the law.

"And then they complain about the actual rules. The ones that mean you survive things."

Jalian made a disgusted noise. "You can't go naked, somebody might see your body! Which we all have. Mostly," she amended, remembering Jono Starsmore. "But don't bother learning how to defend yourself!"

Eliot was glad he wasn't drinking anything at that one. "There are actual reasons for that one," he said, eyebrows raised. "Survival based ones, even."

Jalian rolled her eyes. "Well, you don't go nude to battle if you can help it, or when it's too cold, but when you're trying clothing on?"

Eliot shrugged. "People are stupid, kid. Sometimes the only way to make sure everyone wears clothes when they need to is to tell 'em to do it all the time."

Years of Parker had taught him how to bullshit a reason on moments notice, yes.

Yeaaaaah, Jalian was giving him a dubious look for that one. "Wouldn't teaching them when to wear clothing be better? Or if they don't, they get hurt, and then they know they should?"

"You'd think," Eliot said. "But again, people are stupid." The cook rang the bell indicating Jalian's order was ready, and Eliot picked it up and brought it over with a flourish. "Anything to drink with this?"

"Water," Jalian answered promptly. She knew she could drink it, even if it did taste different than she was used to.

She picked up a fork and poked at the food a bit, turning it and picking some up to sniff before she took a bite.

She made a face - not bad, exactly, but what an odd texture!

Eliot nodded a little at her expression and set a glass of water down. "Takes some gettin' used to."

"It feels strange. Most foods here are strange, though," Jalian said. "And so many of them!"

"It helps when you're internationally connected," Eliot said. "But I still try to grow most of my food right here in Fandom."

His rooftop garden was doing quite well, now that it wasn't glizzarding on it.
